Georgia Gov. Nathan Deal Calls Winter Storm That Snarled Atlanta 'Unexpected.' Really?
The Weather Channel ^ | 1/30/14 | Eric Zerkel and Chris Dolce

In a briefing late Tuesday night, Georgia Gov. Nathan Deal deflected criticism for the traffic nightmare plaguing Metro Atlanta saying in part that the crippling weather was "unexpected" and that government officials made preparations based on forecasts that called for "the majority of the effects of the storm" to be "south of here."

"We have been confronted with an unexpected winter storm that has hit the metropolitan Atlanta area," the governor said.

But a timeline of winter storm watches, warnings, and advisories paints a different picture, one that shows that the governor and other government officials had nearly a day to prepare for significant impacts from Winter Storm Leon.

I had to ride my motorcycle home in the snow many times in Amarillo, when it was clear in the morning and no precip expected. Can’t blame the weatherman, unless he’s preaching global warming.

The mayor of Atlanta is a black democrat from New Jersey, so it can’t be his fault.

This is Georgia. I’m not interested in having a big Government that takes care of every little thing. The crybabies jumping all over the State Gov aren’t from here originally. Maybe they would prefer something more Jersey like.

"Then stay home and wait for it to warm up and melt."

I am staying at home, as I work out of a home office (thank goodness!) However there are many many people here who would have risked losing their job if they had stayed home. I am sorry if I seemed to be a bit hard on you. I just thought you needed to understand that it was NOT just a matter of driving on a couple inches of "snow".

The issue is for drivers to stay off the road during ice storms, not to keep the roads open with equipment. You would think adults would know that you can’t drive in freezing rain.

Had the CITY & STATE GOVERNMENT officials (including ALL local school systems), closed the offices they had control over, there would NOT have been 1.5 million people on the road... Some parents would have stayed home with their kids and the ones who did work would NOT have had 10 hour commutes...

That’s exactly what happened. I live in north Georgia and was watching the local weather channel when it started snowing. That was the first clue that I had what the weather was going to do in my area.

Whining like this is how government grows.

Next thing Atlanta will have its own fleet of snow plows with a bureaucracy of operators that will all sit idle on the public payroll waiting for that one storm in a decade that it won’t be able to do anything about anyway.

It rained before the temperature dropped and started snowing so there was a layer of ice under the snow. No one could see the ice that was causing the problem now people stupidly think that Georgians couldn’t handle the two inches of snow.

Maybe if they would use the Federal funds they get to create their “Emergency Police State” and use if for things that will REALLY be needed such as snow removal equipment, salt/sanding trucks, etc., etc., things would have turned out a bit different. Then again, make them all learn to drive in winter weather (I suggest in New York).

in KY (not exactly a southern state) the KYDOT apparently, revamped the whole state organization-wise
after the debacle(s) in 97/03..weather monitoring systems were improved greatly (no local control?) and
reorganization of state (snowclearing) resources were in-placed. It used to be really (frighteningly) bad.
Then the KYDOT hired some really smart Yankees :-) to help out; the resources were there, but were not
properly utilized effectively.

...had nearly a day to prepare...

Are insinuating that this is plenty of time to bring snow tires into the stores and get them all mounted?

The local weatherman predicted snow below Atlanta. The snow plows and salt trucks were sent to middle Georgia when the weather pattern changed but it wasn’t even the snow that caused the problem it was the layer of ice below the snow and no one can drive on ice not even New Yorkers. The weathermen have been dodging the truth and unfairly shifting blame to the politicians. It was Mother Nature who pulled a fast one.

Thats no excuse. Everybody knows Atlanta sits right on the snow line. It always depends on whether a storm moves twenty miles one way or the other as to if they will get snow.

This was Pzz poor planning.

The mayor of Atlanta didn’t salt the roads like most everywhere else does before a major storm. HowThe media is going after the Repub governor rather than their commiecrat mayor.

“”It rained before the temperature dropped””

Where was the rain? Didn’t rain in Gwinnett County. Clear, blue sky all Tuesday morning until about noon when flurries started.
