People who identify as conservative outnumber those who call themselves liberal in 47 states, according to a new Gallup survey. Nationally, conservatives had a 14.6 percentage point lead on liberals, though that was more than a full point smaller than last years lead. The gap in 2013 was largest in Wyoming, where 40.5 percentage points separated those who identified as conservatives from those who identified as liberals. Only Hawaii, Massachusetts, Vermont and D.C. had more liberals than conservatives. The top 10 liberal states voted for Obama during the last two elections, while the top 10 conservative states chose the Republican nominee.

People are probably talking about their personal lifestyles. They say “conservative “ just because they don’t use heroin or participate in orgies.
Conservatives are their own worst enemies.
We have ignored the culture wars because we don’t encourage talented, artistic Conservative kids to pursue “the arts” and as a result, we’ve let the narrative fall into the hands of the Libs.
This is why these polls about conservatives making up a plurality in the US is suspect.
Usually, we get told 40% identify as conservative and 25% as liberal and make a big deal of that.
Why?
It’s well document that conservatives are more open of their beliefs and willing to defend them. Liberals, meanwhile, tend to avoid that label and hide out under the “moderate” label.
“Moderates” in that poll make up 35%. How much of those “moderates” do you think share conservative values? Probably not much because if they were conservative they wouldn’t have an issue with the label in the first place. Add these together and you get a 55-45 or 54-46 split which just so happens to match the results of 2012 (not that Romney was conservative, but trying to show how Obama can get over 50% if just a 25% of the population identifies as liberal.
The country tilts left thanks to the media and (lack of) education system. Show all the polls people want about Obama being unpopular or his policies. It doesn’t matter. If the election were tomorrow, he’d get re-elected. The dangerous, ill-informed society that the Founding Fathers feared has come to fruition.
I'm pretty sure there is a group that calls itself "conservative" and does use drugs and participates in orgies, but they hate taxes and government authority with a passion.
Over the past 20 or so years, conservatives have done an excellent job of (for lack of a better term) stigmatizing the word liberal. So, outside of the true hard core left, no one wants to be known as a “liberal,” much less to self-identify as one.
Unfortunately, we have not done nearly as good a job at stigmatizing liberal ideas.
Put two and two together, and it’s easy to see how these sorts of polls would under-count the number of liberals out there - there are plenty of people who are liberal on every issue, but don’t identify as such.
Liberals consider themselves to be Moderate or Mainstream. Conservatives are considered to be radical. How do you properly poll someone with that mindset?
But, they do not vote like that. Everyone loves the goodies.
Conservatives candidates calling themselves conservative outnumber liberal candidates calling themselves conservative in 1 out of 4 elections.
Makes sense.
The same results are in CA. The whole problem is these states are so far Left that not being an outright socialist is considered "moderate".
Doesn't make sense. You had it right the first time. Most "moderates" in states like NY aren't socialists. They are baby killers.
“I’m a Conservative who just happens to think that everyone has a right to health care and to be paid a living wage.”
They probably get a lot of responses like that.
There may really be more conservatives, but voter fraud may be a much larger percentage that originally thought?
What about the other 10 states?
Exactly...If you add up all the liberal double and triple votes...all the liberal deceased votes, you have an overwhelming majority....

I agree. Moderates are liberals.
Damn right x10,000!
Pop culture is the most powerful weapon with which to form the views and warp the minds of young people, and for far too long, we on the Right have let our enemies use it against us unchallenged! If we were smart (which is something very few people have been accusing the Pubbies of the last decade or so), we'd be busy creating a conservative pop culture.
But that's going to take money and energy, and most conservatives don't want to part with the former, and seemingly have very little of the latter...they'd rather sit on the couch, thinking they're doing their part by watching O'Reilly and Greta.
Scouts Out! Cavalry Ho!
Typically 1/3 of black americans call themselves conservative, most likely because they tend to have conservative views on abortion, gay marriage, etc. But 95% voted for Obama.
That's it!
I remember, a few years ago, chatting at work with a young kid just out of college. Got onto the topic of politics [at his behest]. With questioning, turns out he was opposed to abortion, thought welfare was out of control, and taxes were ridiculously high.
He also believed, the result of his public school indoctrination, that Republicans were mean and stupid and he would never vote for one. The fact that people label themselves "conservative" should be no solace to us.
