My Dells have all done well. IIRC, I paid $300 for the one I’m typing on right now, and it is doing fine after its first year. But then, I use my computer for word processing and reading FreeRepublic and the news, so I don’t need a great computer.
I’ve got a few vintage Dells where I work that are at least that old that keep on churning 24/7/365.
I had a Dell Millenium for about 15 years which served my needs and the occasional times I needed tech support, they were top notch........
Thank you ... and you’re absolutely correct. And of course his intentions aren’t to flush the whole thing down the drain. I believe Michael has some ideas up his sleeve. But I do think the services division is going to end up based in India.
The word used in my exit interview today was “terminated.” Got a decent severance package along with COBRA insurance extension paid by Dell.
So to answer your question, looks like layoffs not firings. But either way, lots of people are now without jobs.
Lordy I hope he sees that the “India” thingy is one of the problems that has dragged Dell down.
Cobra is meaningless now, just sign up for obamacare and get a subsidy if you’re expecting low income for 2014.
2 months + month per year is almost unheard of generous from my experience. Companies, in general, suck.
Through the 90’s and until 2012 I was Director of IT for a publicly held company. I bought buttloads of Dells. Servers, laptops, desktops. All of it. Also bought HP and Lenovo. Most of the servers though, were Dell. They lasted because we got very good service from them. We got 4-hr replacement of key equipment. That was good service.
I had a perimeter fence detection PC fail, a 486 dx clone. The only PC I had that still had an isa slot to handle the communications card was a Dell optiplex 260. That old Dell has been running perimeter security on a government penal institution now for over a year.
Unheard of but some companies still offer some amazing severance deals. I got laid of from Blue Cross and Blue Shield of Texas in 2010 after 12 years ... I got 9 months full pay and benefits plus bonus. Of course that put me into an ungodly tax bracket that year due to extra income.
RE: Are they being fired or laid off?
It’s a MASS LAYOFF. People tend to use firing as a synonym for layoffs but the two are different.
A layoff has traditionally meant a temporary thing - workers laid off could expect to be called back after some time when business conditions improved. What’s changed? These are to my mind firings.
Dell makes great servers.
I have a couple of Dell PowerEdge servers still running great that I bought back in 2004. The only reason I am considering replacing them is I’m virtualizing my whole environment and need more powerful components that any vintage 2004 server could possibly provide.
Ugh, BCBS has driven me nuts by their obamacare rollout. I’ve been laid off twice from 2 long term ones and got the month per year and one time a useless ‘find another job’ service.
Last one I was able to get this year was a temp after I got my degree and their package was I could leave at lunch and get paid for the whole day.
>> We wish the company’s billionaire founder well as he progresses with the bloodbathing
Then why don’t you mitigate the “bloodbath” and make plans to hire these 15,000 individuals, Tyler? What, you don’t have the resources? Or a reason?
Are Michael Dell’s billions locked away from borrowing and other investments?
Dell makes great products including servers, and leads the market in high performance portable workstations. Anyone that says otherwise is an ignorant fool.
I dare say a few engineering boxes (that aren’t mine) are that era or just a little newer. Fast they aren’t but they hold up. I can say the same about the VAX still in production.
