RAID FILMED: Ankeny Police ‘Traumatize’ Family

Members of a Des Moines family say they were terrorized in their own home by Ankeny police.

Sally Prince is afraid to stay in her own home. “I’ve been so traumatized. I don’t sleep at night,” Prince says.

On Thursday, Ankeny police executed a search warrant looking for someone they suspected of using stolen credit cards to buy clothes and electronics.

The whole search was caught on surveillance video.

Ankeny police tell us they knocked first, but the video shows one officer pounding on the side of the house and seconds later, officers use a battering ram to force their way in.

The video also shows an officer destroying a security camera outside the home.

Two people in the house were arrested on unrelated charges, and the family says none of the items listed on the warrant were found.

Prince’s son, Justin Ross, was in the bathroom when police burst in, and he was carrying a gun that he has the legal right to carry. “I stood up, I drew my weapon, I started to get myself together to get out the door, I heard someone in the main room say police. I re-holstered my weapon sat back down and put my hands in my lap,” Ross recalls.

The video also shows an officer destroying a security camera outside the home.

There is no good or appropriate reason to do that.

So. The police have moved from no-knock SWAT Team raids to fight the War on Drugs to no-knock SWAT Team raids to fight the War on Stolen Credit Cards.

All Righty Then.

“The video also shows an officer destroying a security camera outside the home.”

That alone should be grounds for terminating that officer.

Outside of the fact that it was willful destruction of private property, it really makes the officer look bad - as if he destroyed the camera in order to cover up their bad behavior.

Sad.

“The kid was in the bathroom with a gun?”

How often are you more vulnerable than when you’re in the bathroom?

I carry at home all the time. If there’s one place I can carry openly and without concern for prying eyes it’s in my own home.

I’m surprised they didn’t shoot the family dog while there. It seems to me the police have become increasingly militarized and that scares me.

If you have been carrying, you often still have your gun holstered even in your home. This does not surprise me a bit. Needing to use the restroom put a door between him and the jack boots and probably saved his life.

"The kid was in the bathroom with a gun?"

When someone breaks into your house they generally don't check to see if you're going potty first.

Actually, there's no time when you're more vulnerable and in need of a weapon.

I can think of a few reasons why you’d want to do that approaching a meth lab or a grow house.

Had they taken the computers and recording equipment in the raid, after finding they had screwed up, THAT would have been clearly anti-4th A.

The kid was in the bathroom with a gun?

Whats the big deal? I have a firearm with me 90% of the time. One on my dresser at night. One on my hip or in my pocket when out walking about. One on me in the car. One in my messenger bag. On desk at home. On my desk at work. Sometimes one on my hip when in the recliner watching TV. And yes sometimes one when I am in the bathroom. I want the to become very familiar with the firearms I choose to carry to the point it becomes a natural response to handle it safely and accurately should I ever need to use it.
