CVS, the country’s second-largest pharmacy chain, plans to stop selling all cigarettes and tobacco products, saying they have no place in a drugstore company that is trying to become more of a health-care provider. The White House released this statement from President Barack Obama on CVS’s decision: “I applaud this morning’s news that CVS Caremark has decided to stop selling cigarettes and other tobacco products in its stores, and begin a national campaign to help millions of Americans quit smoking instead. As one of the largest retailers and pharmacies in America, CVS Caremark sets a powerful example, and today’s decision will help advance my Administration’s efforts to reduce tobacco-related deaths, cancer, and heart disease, as well as bring down health care costs – ultimately saving lives and protecting untold numbers of families from pain and heartbreak for years to come. I congratulate – and thank – the CEO of CVS Caremark, Larry Merlo, the board of directors, and all who helped make a choice that will have a profoundly positive impact on the health of our country.”

Wondering, once they get everyone to quit smoking and buying cigs, where will the (HUGE amount) tax money come from?
Health and beauty aides are 40-50. Prescriptions are 100 or more. The cost to carry all brands has risen dramatically since tax increases. The theft is high on these items. At best they create traffic for other sales.

Dumb question...I don’t know of anyplace that has tobacco anywhere but right at the checkout. Why is thief so high?
I’ve always thought it was ridiculous that drugstores, which are supposedly trying to make people healthier, sold cigarettes.

What does one have to do with the other? Are the new CVS health services going to be installed in the cigarette rack behind the counter?
It’s a crock of crap publicity stunt to say “we’re thinking of you so no more smokes”.

Actually, the word that comes to mind is “daytrader.”
From the more in depth articles (like the BusinessWeek one) it seems like they’re trying to form partnerships with outside providers. They believe that getting rid of tobacco will give them a leg up in that regard.
Knowing the emphasis places like Kaiser put on non smoking, it’s a logical rationale.
Cigarettes are no worse for you than marijuana.
Drug stores held a special posistion by our government. They were allowed and even require to be open on Sunday during blue law time. They were able to sell liquor during for medical purposes some tobacco product were was also allowed.
There is a carrying cost to sell tobacco product inventory.

We have Obamacare. We don’t need clinics....or do we? Are these to be the new Doctor offices?

Actually that is where I think things are moving, at least for the lower end of the medical services field.
I don’t know whether it’s a bad thing or not. On one hand walk in service for a kids ear infection or strep or pinkeye ( i have two kids, have lots of experience with bothe) that doesn’t require an MD or an appointment and where I walk out with a filled prescription for Amoxicillin in hand is a good thing. Convienient and keeps costs down; allowing the MDs to focus on the more serious stuff.
On the other hand, as someone else mentioned on an earlier post (other thread, I think) it does increase the risk of a misdiagnosis and delayed effective treatment. So for me the jury is still out.
