Obama: CVS Decision to Stop Selling Cigarettes Will Have ‘Profoundly Positive Impact’
WSJ ^

Posted on 02/05/2014 8:01:34 AM PST by Red in Blue PA

CVS, the country’s second-largest pharmacy chain, plans to stop selling all cigarettes and tobacco products, saying they have no place in a drugstore company that is trying to become more of a health-care provider. The White House released this statement from President Barack Obama on CVS’s decision: “I applaud this morning’s news that CVS Caremark has decided to stop selling cigarettes and other tobacco products in its stores, and begin a national campaign to help millions of Americans quit smoking instead. As one of the largest retailers and pharmacies in America, CVS Caremark sets a powerful example, and today’s decision will help advance my Administration’s efforts to reduce tobacco-related deaths, cancer, and heart disease, as well as bring down health care costs – ultimately saving lives and protecting untold numbers of families from pain and heartbreak for years to come. I congratulate – and thank – the CEO of CVS Caremark, Larry Merlo, the board of directors, and all who helped make a choice that will have a profoundly positive impact on the health of our country.”

Hiding behind government? They same government that makes BILLIONS taxing cigs?

That's the way it is with Crony Capitalists. The Government provides protection, and the Company kicks a little back in consideration.

Without government protection, the tobacco industry would have been sued out of existence, long ago. We would all be better off if it had been. But, instead, they continue under the Governments protection, and people continue to be injured and killed.

Using that "logic" for lack of a better word, ammo manufacturers should be sued for shootings in Chicago. Rope makers should be sued for people who hand themselves.

We are supposed to be a free country; your post is the ANTITHESIS of that.

The difference between tobacco and ammo or rope is that tobacco kills when it is used as intended. With ammo or rope, the user is making a decision in how to use the product which is the proximate cause of the injury. Cigarettes start killing as soon as the user lights one up.

A better analogy would be Thalidomide, which caused injury when people took it as directed. The manufacturer was sued, and it was taken off the market.

To put it another way, is somebody made ammo that routinely exploded in people’s hands, he would bear liability for that product. If somebody built a car that frequently crashed itself and killed people, he would be sued out of business.

There are product liability lawsuits about this sort of thing every day. Why should tobacco be the exception? The answer, of course, is that tobacco is excepted because it buys special protection from the government with tax money.

you have your facts wrong, cigs create a big profit, just because you or I don’t smoke does not mean what they have done is right.
This is about a bigger picture not about what you want or don’t like

Majority of retail theft comes from employees. Cigs are easy to steal and easy to turn into cash. Margins on cigs compared to other items are very low.

HUH easy to steal, er they are behind the counter.

Margins on cigs compared to others is low, er no they’re not.

Where exactly do you get your facts from , because I suggest you look at the invoices first hand as I have.

you are just blinded by the fact you don’t smoke and you want others to not smoke.
It reminds me of most people in the north east when I had the displeasure of living up there. Always want it their way but then when it directly affects them they complain. So shall they also get rid of sodas, hair dye etc?

I managed a drug store. I helped drug stores get financing by doing projections. I have had drug stores as tax clients for 2 decades. Other than that I have no idea what I’m talking about. They prescription business drives the profits (up to ,80%). The other floor sales are from prescription traffic. The walk-in business is location sensitive. A drug store in grand Central will do far more tobacco than a suburban drug store. There was a time when only pharmacies were open on Sunday and this gave them big advantage.

but you still make a profit from tobacco, so this is not about profits, this is not about health as there is a load of crap they could get rid of like soda, hair dye, candy etc.

This is about the Govt influencing a business and there will always be some who hate something whether it is soda, candy or tobacco and will agree on a ban , that is until their product gets banned.
It’s all about me me me today
