Lake Superior nearing rare ice-over

DULUTH, Minn. -- A frigid winter is pushing Lake Superior toward a complete ice-over for the first time since 1996, though there's still a ways to go before you can skate from Duluth to the Soo Locks.

Lake Superior had at least some ice across an estimated 91 percent of its surface as of Thursday, according to the Great Lakes Environmental Research Laboratory.

That compares with the 40-year average annual Lake Superior ice coverage for February of just 30 percent.

George Leshkevich has been tracking Great Lakes ice for the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration Great Lakes Environmental Research Laboratory since 1973. He's seen all kinds of winters over those 41 years, and all sorts of ice cover.

Between the ice cover preventing evaporation, the rainy summer of 2013 and record snowfalls, the lake levels should come up considerably.

Global Warming models predicted this.

Of course they did! After all, the models are (seriously) all over the place and apparently somewhat unstable - tending to spin off into predictions of ice-overs or melt-downs with slight changes in initial conditions. Since mother nature is generally a reasonably stable and self-correcting system (with the possible exception of a super nova) the models obviously have it wrong, and adding artificial constraints to them does nothing to address the underlying problems with the algorithms.

But that doesn't matter to the AGW believers. Every event is proof of AGW. Unseasonably warm, cool, wet, dry, you name it. Any and every weather pattern that rolls along proves their theory. Even no change - proves AGW is stagnating weather patterns. I have literally heard every single one of them from AGW types - the hot/cold/wet/dry/same... It is starting to look like a mental disorder.

From the referenced ice cave article:

Climate change has meant less ice cover on average in recent years (So this year's ice event is normal? Oh wait, it's not normal for Superior to have this much ice... but,... I'm confused. What is the evidence of climate change?)

"If you're out there and there's cracking and popping and you can feel the ice going up and down, it's a good time to go back to the car," (Howk, assistant chief of interpretation for the national lakeshore) said. Spoken like a true professional.

If the temperature gets __________ in __________ it proves global warming is happening.

If rainfall _________ in __________ it proves global warming.

The most telling thing lately is their data magic on historical temperatures. Unable to easily lie about current temperatures, they simply reworked their data calculations to magically make things colder in the past. Then all of a sudden...presto, we are in the warmest years on record.

We in Michigan do have a town called Hell, and it has frozen over, as has the state.

I’m skating to Chicago (from Northern Michigan) next week..anyone want to tag along? :)

As a caver, it is truly remarkable to see water ice developing in one winter the same formations, complete with colors, that can be seen in the calcite formations in limestone caves formed over eons.
