Russian police detained gay rights activists who tried to protest on Moscow's Red Square and in St Petersburg on Friday, shortly before Vladimir Putin opened the Sochi Winter Olympics, gay rights activists said.

Police in Moscow and St Petersburg did not immediately comment on the reports by the gay activists, who said 10 protesters were detained in Moscow and four in Russia's second city.

A list posted by one rights activist on Facebook said two of those detained in Moscow were women from Sweden.

In St Petersburg, the protesters were detained after unfurling a banner declaring "Discrimination is incompatible with the Olympic Movement", gay rights group All Out said.

Yes, it's un-Christian---clearly a sin according to Christian doctrine.

Are you saying that you personally consider it immoral and wrong?

"I cannot compel the conscience of others to reflect that."

Nor can you compel other countries/societies to tolerate the actions of those who advocate perversion and mental illness. There is no "right" to do that.

I’m not defending their tactics. I’m criticizing autocrats that squash officially disapproved of speech. Why are you defending said autocrats?

Lol. Thanks for seeing the point I'm getting at. I was prepared to put on asbestos long johns but not for eager defense of autocracy.

Yes. I personally consider it to be immoral. I said as much upthread. I'll repeat: I think any reasonable reading of that statement says as much.

And I'm not attempting to compel other countries or societies to do anything. They are not, however, entitled to my silence about their restraint of free speech. Any and all who dislike state silencing of lawful redress can and should speak up.

I’m not “defending” anyone. I’m pro-family and anti-homosexual agenda. Are you? Do you want to interfere in what Russia does? Should this country demand that Russia follow in our suicidal footsteps?

I'm clearly defending the basic human right to free speech and redress of government. Are you? Do you want people to stand quiet while Russia interferes with these basic human rights? Shouldn't we expect the same basic speech rights to be extended to all humanity without regard to what country they live in?

Because they are human rights to speak up and redress government when we think it is wrong - not national rights given or withdrawn at the whim of the state.

Right now the US government is using the huge stick of law to force the fag agenda on all of us.

FIghting back vigorously with law is the only solution, along with raising ones’ children properly away from the malignantly vile “gay is good” propaganda.

The opinion of those pushing the homosexual agenda should not be given air time or government money, any more than those pushing pedophilia or bestiality. Just because someone has beliefs of some weird sick and immoral kind, why should those beliefs have the same protection? Belief in behaviors that destroy lives deserve no protection.

Right now and for some years pedophilia is being promoted by many academics and those in the psychology and psychiatry fields as the “next taboo” to be done away with. I am sure you know this. This push to normalize pedophilia is joined at the hip with the “gay” agenda, since many homosexuals molest children and adolescents, and most were themselves molested, thus introducing themselves into the dark world of homosexuality.

The first “Gay Rights” list of demands included the ending of ALL AGE OF CONSENT LAWS.

There are only two sides to this issue.

The side of morality and human civilized behavior, and the side of depravity and evil.

Take your pick.

The Cossacks are still around. In fact, many uniformed Cossacks are working security at Sochi. The Kuban Cossacks and others were officially recreated in 1990.

Putin is a big fan of the Cossacks as a national pride thing for Russia, so they now have military academies, lots of real and ceremonial duties, a dozen different uniforms; while at the same time there are Cossack groups that practice all their old traditions, sort of like Civil War reenactments, except semi-officially.

So yep, riding horseback and using submachine guns.

"And I'm not attempting to compel other countries or societies to do anything. They are not, however, entitled to my silence about their restraint of free speech. Any and all who dislike state silencing of lawful redress can and should speak up."

Not at all. For most of human history, faggotry was seen as wicked, filthy, and unnatural---so much so that it was illegal. The founding fathers of this nation held that same view.

Unfortunately, the country's morals have deteriorated to such a point that many now consider the pushing of such perversion and mental illness on society as "free speech." This is why you can see queers in San Francisco parading their adopted toddlers around in leather and chains. They're just people who deserve their rights, you know. /s

I have no special use for Putin, except when he's humiliating Obama. He is largely just a KGB thug. But thugs get some things right, and on this issue, his decision to protect Russia's children from feces-obsessed deviants is correct.

So we should hope that they do something about it? Commit troops? Have Obama engage President Putin in a discussion?

What "rights" are you referring to here? The right of free speech or the false "rights" that such homosexuals are really trying to force on society?

Because after all - the best way to get government to stop abusing its power is to use government to abuse power to your own ends.

These protesters were not given any government money or public air-time and they were not using force of law to compel the consciences of others.

They raised a sign and a voice. If society can't cope with that then it has other problems causing collapse.

I find the suggestion that tyrannical and autocratic silencing of redress and opinion is required or justified to be repugnant. There are better responses that don't limit the conscience or liberty of others.

We didn't enshrine basic human rights with a little asterisk saying unless I really really disagree with you about what it right and proper.

I have clearly been referring to rights of speech and redress. As I have said. Repeatedly. I seems more than a little disingenuous to not recognize that.

A reasonable reading and context clues suggests that I’m talking about Russia. Where the protests happened. Where the protesters were arrested. Where I’ve been talking about a thuggish KGB autocrat in a suit running the country. Not anyplace else. The society in question in that statement is Russia.

Maybe some Conservatives realize that it’s an internal Russian matter and we should keep our noses out of it.
