Vetting of concealed-carry applicants too weak to trust
Chicago Sun-Times ^ | 12 feb 2014

How safe does this make you feel? Twelve people certified as concealed carry trainers under Illinois’ new gun law have such extensive criminal backgrounds that Cook County Sheriff Tom Dart wants them banned from carrying hidden firearms altogether. One of them is the subject of an order of protection, and police say another threatened to kill a law enforcement officer.

That’s just part of the problem with the new law, approved by the Legislature last summer. There’s no longer any debate that concealed carry is the law of the land, but there’s an excellent argument that it is being carried out in an excessively permissive manner. Combing through a list of 9,349 Cook County residents who have applied since Jan. 5 for five-year concealed carry permits , Sheriff Dart’s office found 300 applicants who have records for domestic violence, gang activity, gun crimes, sex crimes, burglary and other criminal activity. All but five of those applicants were cleared for concealed carry by the Illinois State Police, however, and the grounds for rejection for the five might have been something as benign as not including payment.

Putting in more than 2,000 work hours, they’ve found applicants who’ve been picked up for domestic violence, gun crimes, gang crimes, sex crimes, battery and assault.

Oh, so now simply being arrested means you're a convicted felon? Blow it out your colon hole.

Blow it out your colon hole.

You said it much better than I could as I was trying to put the words to paper saying what you did.

These guys never give up. Frankly, that is the hallmark of the commie party. Quislings on our side, er formerly on our side, use to put up a fight, now they just roll over. Yesterday’s vote an excellent example. Fiscally we are on a downhill luge on ice with a cliff coming up.

No wonder Dart calls the concealed carry law “horrifically unworkable.”

In the Illinois concealed carry law, the provisions for objections by local law enforcement need to be beefed up fast.

So laws that liberals don't like that they think are unworkable need to be fixed (concealed carry). Laws that liberals do like need Republicans to STFU because it's the law of the land (0bamacare). Got it.

Lest we forget, this IS Chicago, Illinois we’re talking about here. Yes, that Chicago and that Illinois, where corruption was long ago elevated to the ‘art form’ that it has now long been.

Don’t worry. The dirt bags are still going to have guns anyway.

The question is, will you have the means to fight back should the need arise.

Well....let’s examine some specifics in this hit piece:

The TRAINER, does not NEED to be allowed to carry concealed.

The 300 applicants who “HAVE RECORDS FOR......” must NOT have been CONVICTED, or they would have been denied the permit.

You're right. That was carefully worded and none of that means those people were actually convicted of anything.

I wouldn't put it past them however to intentionally let in, even place, some very unsavory types in the system. Wait for (or manufacture) a spectacular failure or two, then claim the law wasn't working. That in the interests of "public safety" they had to change it etc. Never mind that this might require a few hundred people get hurt along the way - they have an agenda!

Criminals carry without permits. It’s time law abiding citizens did also.

What are these people doing out on the streets? If they can't be trusted to carry a weapon, which anyone can get at any time, why aren't they behind bars?

As a citizen of this country my concealed carry permit is the 2nd Amendment. Instead of infringing on my and everyone else's rights of citizenship why not revoke the unrepentant and incorrigible criminal's citizenship and kick them out.

Being a free citizen in a fee country has many benefits and privileges but also has a lot of responsibility. Why should people that flaunt that responsibility, act out in antisocial and outright evil ways but still enjoy those benefits and privileges? They should be sent away from decent people and to a lawless jungle that befits them.

The people who willingly take the training and register with the state as concealed handgun carriers are not the problem.

“...police say another threatened to kill a law enforcement officer...”

I see. Now “police SAY” is what we do instead of a trial by jury?

Tom Dart was interviewed on WLS’s Roe and Roeper and he said he wanted to ban carry permits for those with arrests; even if they were not convicted. Dart said “some arrests are worse than others”.

From the comments:

They are either criminals, or they're not. If they are safe enough to be walking on the same street as the rest of us, let them have their guns. After all, if they were really too dangerous to be on the streets, they should be locked up.

Exactly what I've been saying for years- anyone who can't be trusted to carry a weapon should not be running around loose!
