LOS ANGELES — Prosecutors charged former NFL safety Darren Sharper on Friday with raping and drugging two women in California and disclosed he is under investigation in connection with five more drug-related rapes in three other states.

Sharper briefly appeared in Los Angeles Superior Court, where his arraignment was postponed until Feb. 20 at the request of his lawyers. They issued a statement saying he would be exonerated.

Prosecutors then filed a motion to increase Sharper's bail to $10 million and outlined details of investigations involving him in Las Vegas, Tempe, Ariz., and New Orleans.

Sharper has not been charged in the other jurisdictions.

In the bail motion, Los Angeles County Investigator John Maccharella described a pattern in which the former football star met women at clubs or parties and lured them to a hotel room, where they were allegedly drugged and raped.

The motion says the incidents happened in the past five months, with two occurring within a day in Los Angeles and Las Vegas.

He’s small potatoes: the US Supreme Court is connected with 50 million murders.
(And the rape of 50 States...)

He was working for the NFL network on one of their round table talking head shows until this came out. Pretty articulate guy, smooth talker - apparently a ladies man, too.

With the right drugs or enough money anyone can be a "ladies man"...

First let me say the guy is creep and no one but him is responsible or at fault for these rapes.

However I'm reminded of the old fuddy-duddy, old fart, out of touch, traditions that our modern hip societies dispensed with over the past 30-50 years. In the olden days, a single woman simply didn't go to a hotel room with a single man unescorted -- no matter who the man was or how upstanding his reputation was. 6000 years of human history taught us, that it's just NOT A GOOD IDEA for a young woman to find herself in close proximity to a young man's bed. No one will say it aloud any more, but we all have to admit that most of those old traditions were based on thousands of years of sound and proven reasoning.

And for those who will gasp and say that I'm blaming these girls for their own assaults, let's get that out of the way right now. No I'm not. I hope they lock up the filthy animal and throw away the key.

And those colleges are generally having a lot more gridiron success than a generation ago.

But as the Vanderbilt rape scandal showed, smart does not always equate to good behavior. Still, I totally agree with you that in general the more intelligent and academically diligent will be more well-adjusted.

Amen! A lot of stupid girls out there these days. And animals like this are just waiting to take advantage of them.

I am always profoundly astounded when I see a news story about some young woman who has been reported as missing after leaving a bar alone.
