Good Samaritan Backfire: or How I Ended Up in Solitary After Calling 911 for HelpĀ

I live in a new gilded age in a golden city. But sometimes the cracks show, even here. The façade crumbles and you find yourself naked, in solitary confinement, in a wretched, feces-stained prison.

How? As a result of my efforts to help injured bicyclists by calling 911, I was, in short order: separated from my friend, violently tackled, arrested, taken to county jail, stripped and left in a solitary cell. I am writing this story because, if it could happen to me, it could happen to you, and I feel the need to do something to help prevent this brutality from propagating.

I moved to San Francisco 9 years ago for graduate school at UCSF and currently run a company that brings transparency to the food industry and employs 12 people. It may appear to be self-serving for me to say so, but I am a rational and peaceful person whom no reasonable being would deem a threat.

“...Dear Mom; I was drinking in a bar and then went out walking the streets of San Francisco at 1am when the police came by. I attempted to show them how much smarter than them I am. They whupped on me! Sonny...”

Yes, the smarty pants “perp” MUST have deserved his treatment! It’s unfortunate that they didn’t charge the “perp” with felony assault on a police officer—they were cutting smarty pants entirely too much slack.

Are you by any chance a cop? A number of my friends who are (good) cops have “blu” or “blue” in their email addresses.

His story has great verisimilitude-—he’s just young and hasn’t learned to keep his candle covered when dealing with brutes.

I agree with you that the Authors view of personaly liberty does not apply to what he cares about. BUT, I have tried to understand his food transparency business. I have googled it but can’t find anything about it.

If he is doing some kind of organic certification then that fuels choice and I have no problem with economic choice. If he is doing some sort of scheme to apply pressure to get an involuntary response from a manufacturer then I am not ok with that.

But I don’t know.

Regardless, if we don’t every one of us speak up at and against Police abuse of power then we will all be in trouble. I don’t care what or who the person is who is being abused. If cops and beat and imprison people, any people, for no purpose then we are all in danger.

I never have any interaction with LEO’s if I can possibly help it.

The few times I have called the locals I use the admin number. This seems to keep the ‘adrenaline’ factor down.

Once I call them, I simply move away from the AO and let things unfold. I don’t need to be a voyeur. I never get personally involved with either the LEO’s or the situation.

I think what we have in this story is your typical metrosexual liberal who ‘wanted to make a difference’ and demonstrate how morally smug and superior he is by playing a caring role. How female.

OOops! This time, something went awry.

(As an aside, I know I should really care that his civil rights were violated but I just can’t find it in me.)

I don’t recall attacking you personally.

You and me have a history by the way. You may not even remember.

You have always thought that citizens get the beat down they deserve from cops. Have seen you taken that position repeatedly over the years.

So the Thorazine you recommend. Will this be voluntary, or will the State administer it to me involuntarily by order of a Judge?

I don’t recall any billy clubs in the article.

Good Samaritans get lawsuits. It is best they be removed to limit the overall liability of those officially present from a woman who will sue the deep pocketed city for allowing amateurs to intensify her injuries.

Your right. No billy clubs. Just boots, handcuffs, leverage and concrete. But point taken.

Actually he made the mistake of being a self important statist drunk who didn’t know when to get out of the way when the medics arrived.

Cops abused their power as well.

Just another day in the whole degenerate city and life they’ve created.

“He brings transparency to the food industry? Does that mean that he’s a Saran Wrap salesman?”

It means he feels he is the overseer of private businesses and how they choose to operate.

Its a racket. Make laws against private businesses and sell the software they need to comply.

They’ve thrown people in the drunk tank for centuries.

He just wasn’t as much a do you know who I am” as he thought he was.

I don’t really believe a word he says, necessarily.

At the same time, some of what he says about the cops behavior thuggish behavior is probably true as well.

This is nothing new either.

A story of idiots all around.

I don’t recall attacking you personally.

You made up something out of whole clothe and attributed it to me...

Cops gave him what he deserved?

I never said anything like that. You hallucinated it.

You and me have a history by the way. You may not even remember.

I remember another insane attack on me a couple of weeks ago other than that nothing.

You have always thought that citizens get the beat down they deserve from cops. Have seen you taken that position repeatedly over the years.

That is a flat out lie. I have never taken that position. Never!

Look at my posts here and take back your accusation.

Freepers scare me. They seem very uncharitable to those with different political beliefs. We are all children of Gd. We all know stories of true police brutality. Why are you blaming this guy for his fate by his city or even his political affiliation?

If anyone has evidence that this story is made up, present it. If he had been a conservative, are you all ok if this had happened to him? Do you want bad things to happen to real people “on the other team”? If so, you need to accept liberals wanting bad things to happen to you, and then both sides are mere savages.

I come to FR for exchange from people who understand how important a Free Republic is. Not to cheer “US, GOOD! THEM, BAD!” That is just a tribal pissing war.

This article should chill us if there is a chance this guy’s story is true. Regardless of his politics, he represents himself as a decent person, helping strangers on the street. Intelligent. Respectful to the officers. And it seems that these people in the police uniforms have an agenda against the hard working and decent. They have a lot of power. They can take us out of our worlds. They can cause permanent injury and death, hurting not just you, but the family that loves and even depends on you.

We aren’t allowed to carry weapons, but these people are: if they have turned to evil, we are in trouble.

My cousin was hit on the freeway to the point of her car spinning and leaving the lane. She is ok, but the car that hit her tried to get away. A Good Samaritan chased it down and got the plates. The driver was drunk. He was later caught. So when I saw a car hit another car on the freeway, in the other direction, I quickly called 911 to help and report what I had seen, because someone had helped my cousin. After reading this, I’m not sure I’m going to be helping others in this way any more.

You are right about how the anti-cop brigade, who sound like the yippies of old, twist any dispassionate and rational discussion of an event in to being support for police brutality or a full on police state etc...

This.

Said by a human being who gets it.

Anyone who thinks this is ok because this guy fell for liberal claptrap or lives in a liberal place is halfway to evil.

If you respect the notion of a Free Republic, and a Constitution allowing true freedom of life,my need to respect that some people will be different from you. And you need to respect that they are all children of Gd and when they aren’t hurting others, they should enjoy the same freedoms as you.

The only political point to this story, and those who mentioned it were right on, is that THERE IS IRONY: top down government control even if you only wanted it to stop global warming or save the sea turtles or lemony snicketfish, WILL COME BACK TO BITE YOUR AS$. Not that we want this guy to be hurt like this. But maybe libs should rethink their wanting so much control over people by laws and such, and wanting citizens unarmed against any tyranny.

Over the years I have condemned the actions of cops far more times than I have defended them. Probably a result of the fact that far more stories of bad actions by cops are posted than stories where they are in the right. That's the nature of news and the nature of threads posted from the news.

Here is how it goes...

Whenever I defend the cops some drooling idiot calls me a "bootlicker."

Whenever I condemn the actions of cops some drooling idiot calls me a "cop hater."

And then we have threads like this where I neither defend the cops nor condemn the cops and some drooling idiot starts making things up out of whole cloth and puts words in my mouth that I've never said.
