When ‘leave us alone’ became ‘bake us a cake!’

Would Jesus bake a cake for a gay wedding?

It’s a weird question, but we do live in interesting times. And believe it or not, this has become one of the most heated debates of the week. That’s because, this week, liberal Christians pushed the argument that legislation allowing Christian florists and bakers to decline to work for same-sex weddings is tantamount to Jim Crow laws.

The analogy is a stretch. Sexual orientation is not race — and permitting what would most definitely be a very small number of observant Christians to exercise their right of conscience is vastly different from pervasive and state-sponsored racism. (But it is perfectly understandable why anyone would want to appropriate the moral high ground that comes from comparing yourself to civil rights crusaders — and your opponents to white supremacists.)

This doesn’t mean the laws are a good idea, but it does mean this particular analogy (no matter how tempting it is to deploy) is a false one. It’s also a powder keg. If your opening volley hinges on comparing your intellectual adversaries to segregationists, you can’t expect an elevated debate.

The truth is, this is a tough issue that pits things we value as a society against things we value as a society.

We have reached a point in the gay rights debate where all the low-hanging fruit has been picked. We are now entering into the zero-sum game phase of the debate, where gay rights and religious liberty must collide. (In other words, the cake is only so big. If you take a piece, you are guaranteeing the other guy has less cake.)

So who’s right?(continued)

That is not the correct question.

Would Pontius FORCE Jesus to bake a cake?

If forced to serve sodomites, get the money up front and do a really, really crappy job.

Or cancel at the last minute due to illness and give them their money back.

My major question in this whole “debate” is why they have only attacked Christian businesses? Why have they not gone after a Muslim business?

We shouldn’t even be talking about this issue in terms of religious freedom. For me, the base issue is Freedom of Association. When did it become illegal for one private citizen to simply say “No” to any request of their time and effort by another private party.

The ability so say “No” is the simplest and most profound expression of personal freedom.

We have really gone off the rails in this country...

The folks faced with this have to develop a bit of savviness. Instead of announcing “I won’t bake your cake because I am a Christian” they should inquire as to the desired service and precise delivery date, walk a few feet away, open up their appointment book/computer and announce with Oscar-winning chagrin “I’m sorry, my schedule will not permit me to do that for you. Why not try the Big Flippin’ Gay Bakery across town?”

Is there some shortage of bakeries in this country I haven’t heard about? This is simply harassment of a private business. Does a black-owned bakery have to bake a cake for a Klan Grand Wizard?

Why a homosexual would want to force a non-sodomite to bake them a cake is beyond me . . .

No telling what has been added to the batter along the way. I could even imagine that the baker might come up with an intense nose full of buggers and a horrible sneezing condition. Might even forget to wash his hands after using the facilities.

Nope, I think I would prefer someone to bake me a cake that wants to do it, just makes more sense.

That is not the correct question.

Would Pontius FORCE Jesus to bake a cake?

That is still not the correct question.

Would you eat a cake baked by someone who loathes what you stand for and who you forced to bake you a cake?

Or would you go down the street to the baker who welcomes your business?

:: Would Jesus bake a cake for a gay wedding? ::

Let’s not equivocate for the sake of cultural politics. Jesus was not a baker or someone who might even consider making a cake.

To ask the hypothesis is to affirm the conclusion.

Besides that...........

Seriously - why are the attacks only toward Christians? As someone else asks, is a Klan member asking a black owned bakery to do a Grand Wizard cake? Or a Muslim asking a Jewish photographer to take their photos?

It is all appearing to be just so damned orchestrated.

When a gay couple decides to sue a Muslim business for not making their wedding cake or catering their wedding or photographing it — then I’ll give a damn..............

No. OTOH, a black seamstress won a contract for sewing their robes. True story...
