Depending on the jurisdiction, warning shots can lead to charges of improper discharge due to lack of legitimate fear of bodily harm. If you think you must fire a warning shot, at least point the gun in a safe direction where the bullet will have a known trajectory. If you shoot one of three assailants, isn't that a warning shot for the other two?
