So far in Arizona, sexual orientation isn’t on the list of protected groups,so this law was definitely a preemptive strike. However, as the make up of our elected representatives becomes more and more liberal, I don’t doubt the progressives will try to add homosexuals to that list. In that case, how will our local officials help Arizona’s conservatives and religious citizens? Or will we be forgotten?
Jan Brewer for President! Woo! Woo!
The problem is, we live in a country in which fear is becoming the primary driving force behind how people and politicians will act. The left, as always, went on an organized attack from the outset, labeling this bill the “right to discriminate against gays” and a new “Jim Crow” era. OTOH, supporters of the bill, as typical, failed to understand the power of emotionally-charged political language.
I doubt deep-down Brewer wanted to veto this (I have no way of knowing, of course), but she feared the intimidation tactics and didn’t want to be known as the “Governor of hate” who lost her state the opportunity to host the Super Bowl. Things like this will continue as long as politicians (and individuals) feel they have no real protection against these thuggish tactics.
The left does not fear us. And as long as we sit around licking our wounds and griping about “lack of moral courage”, they will continue to laugh at us. Until we adopt their tactics- prosecuting political opponents (for legitimate reasons, of course), creating situations that form the bases for lawsuits against financially vulnerable opponents, and selectively stigmatizing companies for “anti-Christian” policies, etc., it will stay that way...
Good points, Q.
