There was a story some years ago of a young hot-shot German physics PhD who was getting all kinds of amazing results in various fields. Turns out, it was just “matlab” science. Impressive graphics based on nothing more than imagination. I think the hockey stick falls into this category, shoddy science based on computer trickery, producing learned sounding nonsense.
I think it was Norman August who said (around 1970) that the computer was the enemy of progress. Any simulation that cannot be explained on the back of an envelope is worse than useless, it’s dangerous.
