Former Oklahoma and Cowboys coach Barry Switzer: ‘I’d never recruit a white quarterback’
The New York Daily News ^ | FRIDAY, FEBRUARY 28, 2014 | JOHN HEALY

Posted on 03/02/2014 5:45:00 PM PST by MinorityRepublican

Former Oklahoma and Dallas Cowboys coach Barry Switzer has been a pretty harsh critic of Texas A&M quarterback and possible No. 1 draft pick Johnny Manziel. On Thursday, Switzer took that criticism to a new level. In an interview with WNSR Sports Radio in Nashville, Switzer was asked if he were an NFL coach, would he draft Manziel? Switzer begins by saying he “loves his ability, Johnny can play,” but out of nowhere Switzer brings race into the equation. "I've always said I'd never recruit a white quarterback,” Switzer said. “The only way I'd ever recruit a white quarterback to play for me was if his mom and daddy would have to both be black, and that's the only way I would do it. "My offense is a quarterback-fullback offense. I'd have to have a Jamelle Holieway, J.C. Watts [or] Thomas Lott. Those guys are gonna be my quarterbacks, they're great runners, they're great ball carriers and ... able to pass, complete some, and those guys could. Those guys could throw and run." The controversial comments come just one day after Switzer referred to Manziel as an “arrogant little p----.” What makes the comments even more puzzling is one of the quarterbacks he did recruit was Troy Aikman, who had a good laugh about it on Twitter.

Well if he was acting strange, maybe he was drunk and might have forgot about the restriction about carrying guns. He has a history of trying to carry guns on planes and allowing his football team to have machine guns at OU. Maybe TSA has cured him of that habit.

An ex-Dallas cowboy fan told me the pool of quarterbacks with criminal convictions was much smaller back then. :)

Switzer was the Bill Clinton of college football. If he broke rules and got away with them, he’d just break more rules and dare you to catch him.

And are we supposed to care what Switzer has to say?

7 I have a book by Charles Thompson who is interestingly a Black Quarterback who played for Switzer. He basically says that Oklahoma under Switzer was just about as corrupt as a program can be. It was all there, drugs, girls provided for sex basically, you name it, Switzer did it.

24 Switzer was the Bill Clinton of college football. If he broke rules and got away with them, he’d just break more rules and dare you to catch him.

My memory is slipping, but I seem to recall that Switzer was caught in an adulterous relationship with the wife of 1 of his coaches at OU back in the 1980s. Someone made a joke about it incorporating those PSA commercials popular at the time, i.e., "It's 11:00 ... do you know where your child is?" To wit ...

OU and Barry Switzer are coming to town for the big game. Do you know where your wife is?

Could you imagine what would happen if he had said that he would never recruit a black qb?

Other than this being about the quarterback position, Switzer is the rule, not the exception. He was probably just drunk enough to be honest about it.

Yes, that is the book. I got it in the bargain bin but it was surprisingly very readable.

At some time, a few big-time Division I college coaches decided to not give great white, high school running backs a chance, but to instead bulk up and play them at fullback or tight end. Then the same happened with cornerbacks, to have them bulk up and play strong safety if they were lucky, or linebacker. It’s now virtually against the law for a big-time college program to have a white running back or cornerback. That of course then translates into the NFL. I am not a racist at all, but I am tiring of the discrimination against great white athletes. When will it go too far, too far for many to tolerate this form of racism?

There is no question that Blacks seem to dominate most sports which require speed and power. In football there are some positions which require strength rather than power. That is why you see a lot of White offensive linemen.

I do think they have gotten overboard with giving preference to Black players. I can recall when the Southeastern Conference was all White, they did perfectly well against the integrated teams of the rest of the country.

Not that Danny Woodhead is a great player. He’s pretty good. But there are a LOT of white backs like him or even better who aren’t given a chance above Division II college, which I think he was. Look up video of Peyton Hillis at Arkansas. Remarkable athleticism and very fast. Yet he was their third back. He had to bulk up so he could play fullback, and give up some speed (though he was great during the few games he got to start for Denver as a rookie and during that season with an awful Browns team). Toby Gerhart was told coming out of college that if he wasn’t white, he would be a first-round pick. And every time he’s gotten to play because of Adrian Peterson being out, he’s shown fine talent - even a 67-yard run, which doesn’t happen in the NFL unless you are fast.

Blacks totally dominate sprints and hurdles, tho every now and then a White kid will win. Richmond Flowers may have been the best hurdler in the world in his day. Valeri Borzov won the 100 meters in the Olympics as did Alan Wells of Scotland. Wells did have the advantage of the American boycott in 1980 but all the Jamaicans etc. were still there.

I was a pretty good hurdler in college and I would often be the only White guy in each heat.

Yes,.... I was gonna say.

He carries some baggage and he’s flawed. Barry carried baggage when it use to matter, before carrying it was cool.
