The cost isn’t the issue but my time is. I’m a recovering lawyer who still bills more an hour than 3rd world people make in a month. I’m not bragging. It’s just how I make a living and no I’m not rich. Most goes to the church, the government and my kids. But I had to make peace with the fact that no one was going to pay me hundreds of dollars to do the laundry and if I didn’t do it, no one would or at least they wouldn’t do it correctly. LOL So if I start watching a Netflix movie and decide it isn’t worth my time, I can find another one. This weekend I watched Great Expectations and decided that David Lean was my new favorite director. I began to watch The Passionate Friend and was bored ten minutes in although I love Claude Rains. But not enough to watch it. If I were in a college class and was studying long dreamy shots of black and white patterns and reflections in the water, I would watch it but otherwise no.
My father-in-law is a member of the Directors Guild and we were able to see some of the movies because they send him DVD’s so he can vote. We saw American Hustle, Capt Phillips and Saving Mr Banks. Of the three, Capt Phillips was the best. The other two were meh. Actually fell asleep during American Hustle.

Bob Hope and Johnny Carson were both treasures and you’re right again, Billy Crystal always made me gag, too, because of his stupid gimmicks and the fact that it was obvious he was trying too hard to be funny and he wasn’t.
Those people are completely full of themselves and BTW, I haven’t seen any of their movies and don’t plan to, particularly the movie of the year.

12 Years a Slave was excellent, a definite must see. Not about white guilt at all. (****Spolier Alert****) The main character’s savior is a white guy. Also Dallas Buyers Club good movie, shows how our GOVERNMENT through bureaucracy and red tape hindered the approval of effective drugs and therapies early in the AIDS outbreak. Very anti-government movie. Both winners not really bleeding heart material. Gravity...ehhh saw it and was visually stunning but kinda been there done that survivor movie.

Me too...only going to movies like “Lone Survivor” because the audience is typically respectful and polite...will NOT see “12 Years a Slave” because the story has been told ad nauseum...the rest, meh...

Right. I agree with you on all counts.
In my opinion, the subject matter and messages sent by these movies are liberal messages, apart from whether a movie was well done or not.
Why did the powers that be decide to push a story about historic horrors of slavery?
Why did they push a movie about getting drugs for AIDS patients, featuring a trans-whatever character with AIDS?
Why are so many movies full of immoral bevahior and profanity?
Some of these movies may have technical merit in various ways, but, the messages being sent are liberal. Hollywood has decided to force liberal messages into movies and TV shows.
Hollywood in 2013-14, "Hey Libs, Let's make a slavery movie and an AIDS movie."

I’m surprised how many people on this thread didn’t care for “Gravity.” I saw in 3D and was very engaged by it and found it very moving. I thought it was unique for taking place almost exclusively in outer space and for being a two-character movie (though primarily a one-character movie). I thought Bullock was great and actually preferred her to Blanchett. Also, even though it was not a religious movie, it ultimately had a kind of spiritual aspect to it.
