Code Chaos Another nightmare for doctors, courtesy of the federal government

Ever considered suicide by jellyfish? Have you ended up in the hospital after being injured during the forced landing of your spacecraft? Or been hurt when you were sucked into the engine of an airplane or when your horse-drawn carriage collided with a trolley?

Chances are slim.

But should any of these unfortunate injuries befall you after October 1, 2014, your doctor, courtesy of the federal government, will have a code to record it. On that date, the United States is scheduled to implement a new system for recording injuries, medical diagnoses, and inpatient procedures called ICD-10—the 10th version of the International Classification of Diseases propagated by the World Health Organization in Geneva, Switzerland. So these exotic injuries, codeless for so many years, will henceforth be known, respectively, as T63622A (Toxic effect of contact with other jellyfish, intentional self-harm, initial encounter), V9542XA (Forced landing of spacecraft injuring occupant, initial encounter), V9733XA (Sucked into jet engine, initial encounter), and V80731A (Occupant of animal-drawn vehicle injured in collision with streetcar, initial encounter).

The coming changes are vast. The number of codes will explode—from 17,000 under the current system to 155,000 under the new one, according to the Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services (CMS).

I am posting this for those involved in healthcare and to show how completely out of control the federal government is. There will now be 155,000 separate medical billing codes. I like the one for drowning by jumping off of burning water skies. And of course the alien abduction one. SMH

Any “Big Bang Theory” fans out there?

Do they have a code for someone who got his penis trapped in the hand of a robot?

I think they have one for a man who stuck his penis in a car wash vacuum.

This is absolutely crazy. Who but the idiots running this oppressive government could come up with 155,000 medical codes?

Okay - they need 155,001 codes.

My daughter is a CNA, hoping to become an RN, and we were discussing this. She said she can imagine all these people sitting around a big table thinking up these bizarre events and saying “yeah, that’s a good one - put that in” and laughing. And I bet they make a lot of money.

I am thoroughly disgusted with this government for so many reasons.

Insane. The coding depends on how the patient felt about
the disease and the treatment (requiring subjective input),
and on the degree of how serious the problem was
(requiring subjective input).

THIS is designed to lead to 2 real problems.

First, accusations of miscoding and “fraud”,
and second to judging a treatment
not by if it CURES ... but if the patient was “happy”.

Case of bureaucrat thinking their work is more important then the doctor's! The question is which one actually treats the sick.......... then why slow down production!

examples of the insanity

V91.07XA – Burn due to water-skis on fire, initial encounter. Followed by V91.07xD - burn due to water-skis on fire, subsequent encounter.

code Y92146 - swimming pool of prison as the place of occurrence of the external cause.

W59.22XA – Struck by turtle, initial encounter
W61.32XA – Struck by chicken, initial encounter
W61.62XA – Struck by duck, initial encounter
W61.52XA – Struck by goose, initial encounter

Each such entry is subdivided three times. Following “struck by duck: initial encounter,” for example, you’ll find “struck by duck: subsequent encounter,” followed by “struck by duck: sequela.” (Ducks are quite persistent, it seems.) There’s also struck by dolphin, parrot, cow, horse, pig, raccoon, sea lion, nonvenomous lizard, etc., each with its own set of three variations.

As useful as these new categories will surely be in caring for the vast numbers of people struck by wildlife and other things, there’s an arbitrariness to them that is upsetting to the logical mind. There is no “struck by swan,” for example, even though nesting swans are known to be more aggressive than ducks. [1] Then there are those classifications that are too specific. Is there a meaningful difference between the initial and the subsequent encounter with a duck? And would it not have sufficed to have the single category “struck by water fowl”? Because if there is a medically meaningful distinction between being struck by duck and struck by goose, what could it be? Other classifications seem too general. Take “struck by chicken,” for example.

“V9733XA
(Sucked into jet engine, INITIAL ENCOUNTER), “

What’s left after the first time? I’d hate to be see the guy that gets sucked into a jet engine twice. Turned from juice to vapor?

A former employer of mine called last summer to see if I was available to work on new medical billing system software he was planning to develop for a major hospital group. I just laughed and laughed and laughed.

Nurse to Howard....

“Where’s the rest of the robot?”

Howard: “I only built the arm.”

Nurse wryly: “Because that’s all you needed!”

Oh, yes — gotta love how they timed it to coincide with the time when Obamacare really hits — it’s like they just meant to cause mass chaos.

I only use a handful of codes in my practice. This is just waste and overkill.

Government — get OUT of healthcare!!!

Great. The Clueless give us codes when their brains are lost in a world of computer codes that crash every ten microseconds. Good episode for the Twilight Zone.

I wonder if they simplified the coding for the mentally ill? For instance: Are you a LIB/DIM? Then you are mentally ill.

I already do that. If he has not gotten on board the ICD10 train already he can forget about it.
