OKLAHOMA CITY - Of the fourteen 4.0 magnitude earthquakes or higher recorded in Oklahoma, ten of them have occurred in the past four years. Between the years of 1975 and 2008 an average of one to three earthquakes of 3.0 magnitude or larger occurred annually. From 2009 onwards the state has experienced over 200 earthquakes of magnitude 3.0 or higher, an average of more than 40 per year. Several of them have centered near the most populated part of the state, central Oklahoma. In addition, in 2013 Oklahoma experienced 99 earthquakes which measured 3.0 or greater, the second largest in the U.S. behind California.
In October of 2013, Dr. William Leith, Senior Science Advisor for Earthquake and Geologic Hazards for the U.S. Geological Survey (USGS) issued the following statement concerning the uptick of seismic activity in Oklahoma: We've statistically analyzed the recent earthquake rate change and found that they do not seem to be due to typical, random fluctuations in natural seismicity rates....
The largest recorded earthquake in the states history, a 5.6 magnitude earthquake that produced 10 aftershocks, could be felt across several states and occurred on November 6, 2011. A study published in the journal Geology positively linked injection wells with this earthquake and its subsequent aftershocks.
In response to that study, the OGS issued a statement on their website stating, "The interpretation that best fits current data is that the Prague [Oklahoma] Earthquake Sequence was the result of natural causes....
Dr. Austin Holland, who works under Dr. Keller at the OGS, stated, There is a contribution of triggered seismicity by oil and gas activity in the state, but I think there's a combination of natural seismicity change and the triggered seismicity. There clearly has to be a natural component to this.

IF tracking CAUSED earthquakes then Bakersfield would have been gone long ago

Anti-fracking activists love to confuse the public by associating saltwater disposal wells with fracking.
I’m highly suspicious of any organization with .gov after the title under the current manipulative Obama administration.
bttt
and part of the deal is in a lot of the parts of the country they didnt have seismographs monitoring the areas they do now or as sensitive of ones, so now that they can detect much smaller magnitude of quakes they see a huge uptick in the amount, but that isnt to say that they werent happening prior, there is no way to know on the small ones because no one was measuring them.
Ok, basic high school science. Parts of the Earths crust are continuously trying to move in relation to each other. They are not smooth, so the movement is blocked and earthquakes result when the plates slip and release the potential energy they have been storing up. Assuming that fracking and not waste water wells are in fact increasing the prevalence of earthquakes, which, knowing USGS is probably not an actual fact, then it’s a good thing any way. The potential energy will be released sooner or later and releasing it a little at a time is better.

Yes, two entirely different things but on down further in the article they posit the idea that disposal wells in conjunction with fracking, if situated closely enough to one another, could be responsible for some of these quakes. A little clumsily phrased in the snippet above.
The libs often suffer from cognitive dissonance and this is where they believe coincidence is causation. Facts and data are to be sifted for only the data that fits their agenda. What a world they live in eh?
And how far back do records go of earthquakes in Oklahoma?
Scientific consensus I see.
There is a contribution of triggered seismicity by oil and gas activity in the state, but I think there’s a combination of natural seismicity change and the triggered seismicity. There clearly has to be a natural component to this.
So it is definitely caused by man made activities but definitely caused by nature.
I thought Fracking caused the sky to fall. (Sarcasm)
This is from the Oklahoma Geological Survey’s website: Oklahoma has long been recognized as having significant earthquake activity, and the OGS began earthquake monitoring 40 years ago with its first seismic station that is still in operation near Leonard, OK. Also during the 30-year period prior to 2009 when the OGS expanded its monitoring to a network of stations, there was an average of about 50 locatable earthquakes each year, with only a few strong enough to be felt.
Its part of a longer post “OGS POSITION STATEMENT-OKLAHOMA EARTHQUAKE ACTIVITY” http://www.ogs.ou.edu/pdf/OGS_POSITION_STATEMENT_2_18_14.pdf
‘The libs often suffer from cognitive dissonance and this is where they believe coincidence is causation.’
SO YER SAYIN FRAKIN’ DOES NOT CAUSE FLU MR. 77?
IT MIGHT CAUSE THE FLU AND GOD KNOWS WHAT ELST....IT MIGHT JUST CAUSE OTHER STUFF....AT ANY RATE WE NEED FURTHER STUDY....
STUDY STUDY AND EVEN MORE STUDY....
I SAY....l’audace, l’audace, toujours l’audace.....ON IT....
The question is, “Does it matter?” The Geysers power plant at the Clear Lake Volcano region in California clearly has a connection with the earthquake swarms there. Mind you there would still be earthquake swarms and, one of these days there will be an eruption, however, the drilling and pumping/infusion isn’t speeding that up and may well be providing “lubrication” allowing nondestructive fault movement.
Fracking may affect existing fault systems but not create new ones. The interaction may reduce stress.
They left is desperate to stop any sort of energy production. Luddites indeed. Fracking has been done about 2.5 million times in the U.S. since the 1940s.
