Russia may be tightening its grip on Crimea, with little resistance to date, but they have yet to face the Crimean Tatar factor.

There are 266,000 Crimean Tatars in Crimea, over 13% of the local population. They are Sunni Muslim, traditionally pro-Ukrainian, and much better organised than the local Ukrainians, who make up 23% of the population.

Not so many there as before World War 2. Whether they collaborated with the Germans or not, Stalin and Beria believed they did. And Boom! Off to Central Asia as soon as the Red Army kicked out the Germans.

Khruschev let them resettle...at least those that had survived the deportation.

Note that all they want is a homeland - their homeland - and the Ukraine free. They’re not seeking a fight and have, like the Ukrainians, been repeated victims of the Czar, the Soviets, and now Putin. Putin’s really screwed up his potential to recreate a more violently nationalistic empire.

If Russia is stupid enough to screw with the Ukraine and the Crimea, they may find themselves in another Afghanistan debacle. Neither the Ukrainians nor the Crimea region have ANY love for Mother Russia. If the Russians come to kill them, they will kill the Russians back. It is really very simple.
