Grand Island is one of those geographic oddities that makes for great trivia betting. It’s one of only a few spots in the US where you can travel South and wind up in Canada.

A high school student in upstate New York was suspended for wearing an NRA T-shirt

Shane Kinney, a 16-year-old sophomore from Grand Island, located between Niagara Falls and Buffalo,

Niagara Falls is UP STATE New York? It’s not even in the northern half of the state.

I guess anything that is not New York City is up state these days.

I worked on Grand Island for twelve years. I am so thankful that it’s in the past. There are Grand Islanders who are proud of the fact that they haven’t been off the island in 10 or 15 years. On Grand Island family reunions are the best places to find dates. And the reason so many Grand Islanders look similar is because of the reduced gene pool.
My daughter didn’t believe me until she took a caregiver job at a nursing home on Grand Island and then one day she came to me and said, “Dad you were right. Grand Island is some kind of inbred community.”
