Ron Paul on Crimea: Why does US Care ?
Politico ^ | March 18, 2014 | Tal Kopan

Former Rep. Ron Paul says that America’s reaction to Crimea’s vote to secede from Ukraine should be,“so what?”

“Why does the U.S. care which flag will be hoisted on a small piece of land thousands of miles away?” the Texas Republican and libertarian icon wrote in a USA Today op-ed Monday.

...Over the weekend, Crimeans voted to secede from Ukraine and join Russia, which the Russian government has moved to approve. American politicians have called the vote a sham and the administration has said it does not recognize the results of the vote, placing sanctions on some Russian officials in response.

Ron Paul said at least three other regions, Catalonia, Scotland and Venice, are similarly seeking to leave their countries, and the U.S. and Europe should allow events to proceed uninterrupted there as well as Crimea, saying “self-determination is a centerpiece of international law.”

… Paul said the “minimal” sanctions from the White House is all the global economy can afford, and it is the global economy that promotes peace, not intervention.

We utterly destroyed Japan and Germany and killed as many Japanese and Germans as we possibly could by every means we had and any means we could invent.

If we’re willing to do that again, maybe.

It worked in Japan and Germany, but not much of anywhere else.

It worked pretty slick in the ROK ..... and it was working in Iraq, too, until Jug-Ears jerked the sawhorses out from under them (because they were winning -- Jug-Ears couldn't stand it if a bunch of historians got together 45 years from now and concluded that Bush's gamble and his meeting Saddam's/the Chinese's bump-and-raise had actually worked and that we had won the Iraq War.

that!

Anyone smell a rat-b*stard political liberal in the woodwork besides me?

Actually I am a healthcare professional and probably earn a great deal more than anyone at any Russian embassy.

But I did have the incredible fortune to be a guest at a black tie dinner at the Russian embassy in DC some years ago, where my then 10 yo son spoke to a packed house, and brought many of them to tears.

I have also been so fortunate to be a guest at the US embassy in Tbilisi not so many years ago and had the most wonderful time. I have never seen such incredible dancing before or since then. Nor have I tasted more wonderful wine than I did in Georgia.

So there is my history on embassy time. Hope you enjoyed it.

We did no such thing. Not even close.

Were you an affirmative action hire, or are you purposely being sloppy?

That is, it appears you simply don't care about either properly constructing an accurate narrative, or defending one with sufficient rigor, knowing the average 'Murican is going to lap it up and ask for more?

If that's the case, I'm right there with you, which is why I separate finances from politics. If one wishes to achieve and enjoy some level of financial comfort, they should always bet on the idiocy of the dunces. After all, Obama won not once, but twice. And his opponent? How many people believed his bullsh!t?

But FR used to be a decent place to discuss real world issues with respect to politics. Sadly, a lot of posters & posting volume has migrated to greener pastures (count the number of re-posts from ZH) due to the D-K effect of those who remain.

Sort of like the old Southern response when a yankee says the War Between the States was fought to “save the Union.” Southerner says “Why?”

Oh and I live about 1/2 mile from the Pacific ocean on the Washington coast, so it would be difficult to work at an embassy and commute.

With you in spirit on this. It really was a terrific place, with great intellectual challenge and discussion. I have many wonderful threads saved. Also I recall times when I laughed until I could hardly breathe..

More and more lately, we get the kinds of responses you see here. Name calling and one liners that are meaningless.

That’s about it in a nutshell.

There’s another aspect too: Crimea contains Sevastopol, Russia’s only warm water port. It is a huge strategic issue for the Russians. The Russians are not going to give up Crimea easily, if ever.

People who think that the Russians will give up Crimea based on some western agreement should ponder: “Would the US give up the USN base at San Diego (including the SEAL training grounds at Coronado Island) to Mexico if suddenly Mexican nationalists tried to re-claim California as their own?”

No way. No friggin’ way. We’d go to war with Mexico over such an issue, just as the Russians are over Crimea.

I’m probably intelligent enough to look out for myself and form my own opinions from firsthand experience.

Anyone smell a rat-b*stard political liberal in the woodwork besides me?

It was rat-b*stard political liberals who gave Eastern Europe to Russia, gave away China in '49, kept us from winning all of Korea, gave away Vietnam to our enemies after we'd won, and Korea, and Iraq, and the Balkans, now Afghanistan...

The real point is that we can't win a war while rat-b*stard political liberals are educating our children.

Here is what I propose to do about that.

I do believe the Red Army had something to do with that.

gave away China in '49

Ditto the People's Army. We funneled immense amounts of money and arms to Chiang, who wasted them, most of them winding up in enemy hands.

kept us from winning all of Korea

Not doable without nukes, and quite considerable possibility of an international nuclear war.

gave away Vietnam to our enemies after we'd won

I'll give you that one.

Iraq, and the Balkans, now Afghanistan.

I'm not sure what you mean with these. Do you really think the USA should conquer, occupy and rule these countries indefinitely? I certainly don't want to.
