I’m no longer amenable to the USA getting involved in wars. The USA is almost broke. We don’t have money to defend our borders or ourselves or provide the military with benefits. Before we start taking on the lead in another war, I want these other countries around the world to expend their own treasure, and children’s lives defending themselves. We’ll play strong safety as long as they fill out the line and take the beating .

Granted, but the projection of power does not require getting involved in wars. It derives from a coherent foreign policy based on national interest and actions to put it into effect, backed up by a credible military defense capability. Obama has retrenched from acting in the national interest, much less maintaining military credibility, and the opportunists out there know it.
