Charla Nash, victim of Travis the chimp, pleads for right to sue Connecticut

Nash, who required a face transplant following the 2009 rampage, says the state is liable for $150 million because it knew the chimp posed a threat. Connecticut lawmakers are considering a bill that would overturn a state commissioner’s ruling that denied Nash the right to sue.

A Connecticut woman mauled by a pet chimpanzee in 2009 made a rare public apperance before politicians Friday, pleading for the right to sue the state for $150 million.

Charla Nash, who is blind and underwent a complete face transplant following the gruesome rampage by Travis the chimp, points to a memo by the state's Department of Energy and Environmental Protection that labeled the primate “an accident waiting to happen.” She has prosthetic eyes,

Last year a state claims commissioner denied Nash’s request to sue. Lawmakers are considering a bill that would overturn that decision.

She made a brief statement at the hearing, saying that her lawsuit, if allowed to proceed, would give her the chance to live a more comfortable life.

~snip~

“I’m hoping that the legislation will allow me to have my day in court, that I will be able to have a judge listen to the evidence that is brought before him about the vicious attack on me, and that it shall not happen to any other person again.”

The state memo noting Travis "could seriously hurt someone” came a year before the beast went berserk and tore Nash’s face apart and ripped off both her hands.

She says it is evidence Connecticut authorities should have seized the chimp.

Had the CT government known there was an irrational, malevolent, trained chimp in the state they would have had him run for office

If the state knew of the danger and didn’t do a thing to prevent it other than a letter, there is precedent especially if the authorities stated the danger yet made no effort to prevent harm. I know of an animal bite case where the state identified a dangerous dog and didn’t move to protect the public and the dog took off a 5 year old girl’s face.

...the state knew a year before...

but what did Carla know and when did she know it?

By that standard, you shouldnt’ sue someone over a dangerous cliff that you jumped off of.

"The tremendously powerful primate could open doors using keys, ate at the dinner table with a glass of wine and adored ice cream. He was a big fan of baseball, could drive a car, enjoyed painting and even took baths with Herold."

Right but the stupid women would have fought the state tooth and nail, gone on TV wailing about the state seizing their chimp.

It’s not the primates, it’s the people who raise them.

by that reasoning a State could be sued everytime someone is killed with a gun, because Democratic lawmakers all the time tell us how dangerous guns are, and that people having them is just an accident waiting to happen.

Chimpanzees are especially nasty. I’d rather take my chances with a gorilla.

What if McDonalds had spilled hot coffee on the chimp’s lap. Then what?

A chimp is a dangerous animal. By third grade or so, at the latest, you become responsible for internalizing that fact and acting accordingly for the remainder of your days. There is no role for the state.

She's embarrassed that she put herself in the position to be attacked and now she's just suing to save face.

Right you are. An adolescent chimp has the mentality of an angry two year old and the strength of six men. A gorilla is less likely to attack though they will if provoked.

Gorillas generally try to avoid confrontation in the wild while Chimpanzees often initiate confrontation.

I was watching a show a while back about great apes and almost every single time the silverback male would show himself and beat his chest to an invading group but it was generally done at a fair distance. Usually the invading group would back off.

With chimpanzees they all get involved in getting in each others faces and are pretty quick to go to war.
