In exactly 100 days, the Royal Navys biggest ever warship will be named by the Queen, who will smash a bottle of champagne on the 65,000 tonne aircraft carriers bow and name the vessel after herself. The ceremony will mark 16 years of work on the £6.2bn project which now employs 10,000 people at 100 firms working in every region of the country. When the HMS Queen Elizabeth becomes operational in 2020, she will deliver a radical change in the Navys capabilities, with her 4.5 acres of flight deck and 40 F35B joint strike fighters able to deliver bombs with pinpoint accuracy hundreds of miles away.

Lead items go back that far, not the functional ‘build’ of the carrier.
Yup. I think the ‘hope’ is maybe 12 or so by 2020. Who knows.
Conventional
Two important US weapons from WWII were the P-51 Mustang and the B-29 (dropped the A-bomb) -- both of these were begun in 1938, right around the time of the Munich pact and "Peace in our Time". Somebody on our side was paying attention and knew that trouble was coming.
My big worry about Obama is that he is cutting Defense at a time when anyone can see that the world is heading for trouble. We are not preparing -- which means are have already decided not to have a big role in the future.
Still can’t get used to the twin islands..
:)

Schooled. Thanks.
uuuuuummm That looks hard, I’ll just ask my friend nully to do it. ;9)
I’m sure the names have been chosen.
HMS Queen Elizabeth
HMS Prince of Wales
Some pretty decent history with both of those.
My own tuppence would have been for HMS Indefatigable and HMS Indomitable.
I gave her some credit for having class. Now...not so much!
HMS Warspite would also be appropriate.
The joke is that they planned on calling it the HMS Indefatigable, but they decided that it sounded too homophobic.
Obama’s DOD has five of our big carriers long term berthed side by side at Norfolk, VA. A great big Pearl Harbor style target. We only put three of our 11 carriers out to sea now, no wonder Iran, Russia & Red China are so aggressive.
She doesn't choose the name, but it's actually named after Queen Elizabeth I of England - if it was named after the current Queen, it would be HMS Queen Elizabeth II (previous examples of British ships show this - HMS King George V, and HMS King Edward VII, for example - the Regnal numbers are used.
The mustang was as much British as it was American.
