Someone correct me if I’m wrong, but, I’ve heard that Chinatowns in many cities have been preserved more as tourist attractions, than neighborhoods in which big numbers of ethnic Chinese still live. I’ve heard that many shopowners and restaurant owners in these Chinatowns don’t live in the Chinatowns anymore. Just what I’ve heard. The same may well be true of Little Italys in various cities.

That's true almost everywhere, but New York's Chinatown keeps growing from new immigration.

There are lots of ins and outs to that. For example, the Germans who formed rural towns in Pennsylvania and Texas used their isolation to retain their culture. Today it’s funny when a German visits them, because their language is more like what the German’s great-grandparents spoke.

Mexicans really cover the gamut of integration. It can be fast or so slow they remain Mexicans. Instead of following the three generation pattern of wave immigrants from Europe, they have all generations at the same time. If they *have* to integrate, they do.

Murray Hill has remained viable with a number of successful bistros, stores, and art galleries to attract the yuppies. I often eat at Washington Place at the foot of Murray Hill before a concert at totally restored beautiful Severance Center. They still have the Feast of Annunciation and an Art Walk in June which is well attended.

Btw University Circle generally is coming back in an encouraging way. You ought to come back and visit the Art Museum with its multi -million dollar additions and restorations complete.

Little Italy in nyc had been reduced to just a couple of city blocks 25+ years ago. This isn’t a news story.

It’s not news that it is going to be reduced from a couple of city blocks to no city blocks? Hmm.
