Beer brewers push back against proposed FDA rule restricting use of old grains

Beer brewers are objecting to a proposed federal rule that would make it harder for breweries to sell leftover grains as animal feed instead of throwing them away.

The Food and Drug Administration rule change would mean brewers would have to meet the same standards as livestock and pet-food manufacturers, imposing new sanitary handling procedures, record keeping and other food safety processes on brewers.

The only outstanding need for these new regulations is the FDA’s outstanding need to regulate.

Increased meat prices, just what we need.

I know a pig farmer that gets rotten soup from Campbell’s Soup. His pigs are inedible. Pure fat. It’s a wonder they live the six months.

What we really need is legislation prohibiting animals from eating anything on the ground.

Does filling a silo with corn silage require sanitary handling procedures? Baling and storing hay? How about pasture grasses? Grains?

Not just increased meat prices, increase in food prices overall.

The millions of tons of grain they are getting now will have to be replaced from somewhere, and that is from the grain supply.

More demand for the grain=higher prices.

That rancher had best keep quiet. He may wake up one night to the sound of an FDA SWAT Team raiding his home. Not only will they kill his dogs; they’ll shoot his cattle too!

Higher prices are probably why they are doing this.

Don’t know how this meshes with the by products of the ethanol industry, but all that corn mash goes straight to the mouths of hungry and tasty animals. It is very good for them and the environment as well to be able to use it twice.

Why yes, of course! Everything has to be regulated to a fare-thee-well in order to provide those good government jobs for otherwise unemployable drones. You know, sociology majors and such carrying > $100K student loans. Chow for paragraph eater.

"His pigs are inedible."

Why raise inedible pigs? Or is it a case of them being inedible because he's a bad pig farmer?

beer brewers? What about ethanol plants’ DDGs?
The Purina plant we’ve hauled into is EXTREMELY sterile. I cannot imagine duplicating the process elsewhere.

Increased meat prices are really what this proposed regulation is designed to produce, regardless of the environmental and economic damage it does by killing a really great recycling program that saves a lot of money for brewers and ranchers while keeping brewery waste out of landfills. Remember, the EPA is on a jihad (deliberate insult to the Mahdi and "his" fake "religion")to eliminate cow farts. Since it's in the basic nature of cattle and all other animals with mostly vegetarian diets to produce methane, belch, and fart, the only way to deal with the "problem" is to reduce the number of cattle and increase the price of meat. Naturally, that also is a good because it punishes Americans for being American, a primary goal of all the Mahdi's efforts.

Agent Foonman, get down to the Johnston Farm and turn in a complete report on what the pigs are eating today...

I immediately thought they’re working hand in hand with the EPA on this one.

Higher prices are probably why they are doing this.

Also to protect the distributors and mega-breweries by increasing costs imposed on micro-breweries and craft breweries -- one of the most successful segments of small businesses right now.

Exactly correct. Crony Government at its finest. The EPA/FDA is merely making a ruling favorable to the Big Donors, and it just so happens that it is also in keeping with their ridiculous ideas of environmentalism, etc.

There is no sense, thought or consideration. Only the rules. Obey.

But it isn't even in keeping with their ideas of environmentalism. If breweries do not want to go to the expense of all the drying and sterilizing of the spent grains, their only choice is to just dump them -- throw them away where they end up in landfills. This policy/regulation incentivizes small businesses to dump into landfills rather than recycle into a food product.
