Since 1994, when Harris first began polling a large sample (2,311 this year) of Americans with the simple question "Who is your favorite movie star?", only one actor has made the top ten every year and only one actor has made it posthumously: John Wayne. In 2014, The Duke did it again, placing 7th -- holding the same spot he held last year.

Frankly, I dislike all of the films John Ford directed. I preferred Howard Hawks portrayal of the American Cowboy.

We own Rio Bravo (the version with Dean Martin and Walter Brennan). Love this version.

I'll raise you a Jimmy Stewart and a Cary Grant.

Do you remember Jimmy Stewart on Johnny Carson when he read his poem about A Dog Named Beau?

I can think of lots of other stars I like much better than what’s on this list. No Cary Grant, Eva Marie Saint, Heston, Newman, Audrey Hepburn, William Holden, O’Toole Jimmy Stewart to name a few. Clooney...oh please.

I miss Old Hollywood as much as I miss Old America. Loved John Wayne. Can't think of a movie I did not like him in.

Gosh, I loved Audrey Hepburn, Bogie and William Holden in Sabrina.

Here are some pics of the greats from decades ago.

Or Bogie's reply to Major Strasser:

Major Strasser: Are you one of those people who cannot imagine the Germans in their beloved Paris?
Rick: It's not particularly my beloved Paris.
Heinz: Can you imagine us in London?
Rick: When you get there, ask me!
Captain Renault: Hmmh! Diplomatist!
Major Strasser: How about New York?
Rick: Well there are certain sections of New York, Major, that I wouldn't advise you to try to invade.

I love those lines.

Jimmy Stewart's tremor in his voice at the very end of the poem got to everyone including Johnny Carson.

It got to me too.

Have you seen The American Tail: Fievel Goes West? Loved James Stewart’s character in that animated film. It was his last film.

One of my favs:

Rick: How can you close me up? On what grounds?

Captain Renault: I’m shocked, shocked to find that gambling is going on in here!

[a croupier hands Renault a pile of money]

Croupier: Your winnings, sir.

Captain Renault: [sotto voce] Oh, thank you very much.

[aloud]

Captain Renault: Everybody out at once!

Although he plays a dog in this animated film, James Stewart was simply brilliant.

That scene is a classic. It comes right after Laszlo conducts La Marseillaise and drowns out Herr Major Strasser and his goons singing the German song. What a great scene right before the classic scene.

When I was young I didn't appreciate Jimmy Stewart or Old Hollywood.

There was lots of great lines in that movie. It’s one of the best. Thanks for the pics. Lots of greats in that series. I loved Gable and I had forgotten about Robert Mitchum. He was a great talent. I’ve always enjoyed Stewart Granger. Now, John Gavin, I don’t think he was a great actor, but what a hunk. There is just so many that I could put on the list. Then there’s countless actors that always played supporting roles, but whose talent gave so much to the quality of the pictures.

My mother was a film fanatic. We loved those films, but I do appreciate them a lot more now than I did back then.
