Looking at the other names on the list, I would have put Wayne at first.

And why shouldn’t he be there? His movies are enjoyable (yeah even the really old oaters). I still think The Quiet Man is one of the best movies ever made. His work with Maureen O’Hara over the course of several movies plus he and Late Hepburn in Rooster Cogburn are my go to movies for a truly lovely evening

Unlike the others on the list, he did not consider his celebrity as a reason to push his POV.

Only current guys I like are Russell Crowe,Liam Neeson, Colin Farrell.&Matthew McConnaughey.Lots iof fine single performances from lower-level non -star actors always more satisfying from the usual star turns in vehicles designed only to promote and sell the star, and hence, the film. Clooney, Damon, and a bunch of others fit this category. The old -timers look better everytime I see them in a movie:Jimmy Stewart, Gable, Lee J. Cobb, Fredric March, Gary Cooper. But towering above them all is my odd favorite movie actor in American film: Walter Huston. See Dodsworth , from the mid-30s, to see the most pitch-perfect performance ever.

Wayne considered “Red River” as his best film. He also used the Red River D brand as his own brand and also had that brand on his belt buckle which he was usually filmed wearing.

I personally think “The Man Who Shot Liberty Valance” was his best. Also liked “The Quiet Man”.

Julia Roberts made the list?????? Tom Hanks is a good actor, probably better than good, but he’s out of Wayne’s league. He is more versatile than Wayne but role for role, no one out beats Wayne.

My take on the top 10:

10. Meryl Streep - Agreed. Whatever her politics, Streep is probably the greatest living actress out there (I know the list is about most popular, but still good to see her here.)

9. Brad Pitt - Bleah. One of the most overrated actors of the past 20 years, IMHO.

8. Eastwood - A-Yup. One of the top 10 directors, too, IMHO.

7. John Wayne - awesome! I love the fact that the Duke is still a top 10 fave. IMHO, Wayne was a better actor than he gets credit for (at least outside of his fan base). His performance in The Searchers, for example was about as good as it gets.

6. Johnny Depp - IMHO, Depp is coming awfully close to jumping the shark. I really enjoy his early work - What’s Eating Gilbert Grape, Donnie Brasco, Ed Wood, etc. Since the Pirates films, though, he’s becoming increasingly hit and miss as an actor.

5. Sandra Bullock - I guess she’s America’s sweetheart or something now. Eh. I think she’s a very average actress, though she is quite the star right now.

4. Julia Roberts - I remain mystified at JR’s success. I think her brother Eric is a much more interesting and compelling actor.

3. Jennifer Lawrence - Who?

2. Denzel Washington - Good actor. Don’t know if I’d call him great (again, I realize talent and popularity aren’t always the same thing).

1. Tom Hanks - Loved his early comedy, loved his work on Band of Brothers, loved that he bankrolled My Big Fat Greek Wedding, can’t stand to watch him anymore as an actor.

Friend/co-worker of my mom—her husband would watch “The Quiet Man” every night. He’d say, “Well, it’s time for my movie.” and he’d go watch it on vhs.

Lucky enough to see “The Searchers” on the big screen last year.

James Cagney should be somewhere.

IMHO, his performance in “One, Two, Three” is the greatest comedic performance on film.

My “ten” rating in no particular order. simply ten of the very best!!!

- John Wayne
- Charlton Heston
- George C. Scott
- Clark Gable
- Jennifer Lawrence
- Sandra Bullock
- Christian Bale
- Maureen O’Hara
- Robert Downey, Jr.
- Steve McQueen

Of course there are hundreds of great actors that belong in the top ten, Greg Peck, Cary Grant, Betty Davis, Clint Eastwood and many more low life types than rate being thrown in the garbage can. Here are ten deadbeats, IMHO.

- George Clooney
- Meryl Streep
- Oprah Winfrey
- Jack Nicholson
- Robert DeNiro
- Barbra Streisand
- Tom Hanks
- Julia Roberts
- Jane Fonda
- Morgan Freeman

Why? Politics and acting do not mix....ever!!! I go to see a film to get involved in the film and art work....not the actor’s politics!!!

While I love many of the old Hollywood actors and actresses, I find the older I get the more I come to appreciate the talented acting of Bette Davis.

I have loved John Wayne since I was a small child. As an adult , the movies I enjoy most may have changed. ..as a child I loved Stagecoach and still do but I think my all time favorite movie of Wayne's is The Searchers. Wayne was phenomenal in that role. The combination of Wayne and John Ford is unbeatable. If I could own only one actors movies it would be Wayne. I love "They were expendable" and any western or WW2 movie Wayne made.
I notice the older I get, the more I appreciate older movies. Nothing is new under the sun and remakes of older movies leave little to the imagination and I think that cheapens a film and underestimates the audience. I could watch movies from 1939 all day long. But as far as great actors I would go with Wayne, Barbara Stanwick, William Holden, Paul Muni, Bogart, Heston, Claude Rains, Jimmy Stewart,Charles Laughton, Ingrid Bergman...Any of those will make me sit on the couch all day

The only people answering their phones these days old people and kids at home who don’t have jobs.

John Wayne was an OK actor. The other people on the list are OK actors.

John Wayne, as a man, was no more or less “manly” than others who lived and actually went to war instead of getting deferment after deferment.
