SAN DIEGO – A U.S. Navy warship reached a crippled sailboat hundreds of miles off the Mexican coast and was preparing Sunday to complete the rescue of a sick 1-year-old girl.

The transfer of the child from the 36-foot boat to the ship was expected to start around dawn, Coast Guard Petty Officer 2nd Class Barry Bena said Sunday.

"Sometime this morning as soon as they get some light they are going to take the child off the boat and bring her aboard the naval vessel," Bena told The Associated Press.

sigh. truly lost.

It is a shame you are truly lost. Too bad you don't get out and travel more. There is a whole lot of the US you have yet to see, and lots of world beyond. Boating is fun too, although safety and preparation should always come first.

You are a sheltered, weak, modern arm chair American. And your posts show it.

Oh, for the chill’n, we shouldn’t risk any danger for the chill’n.

I could die driving to the grocery store in my perfectly safe car, in my perfectly safe neighborhood tomorrow. And children could be harmed. Or, for goodness sake, die.

Please.

I also agree that a sail boat with working sails does not lack steering.

I have to disagree. If the tiller is broken, depending on the wind, the sailboat is effectively disabled. Some "steering" may be effective downwind, without a tiller, you cannot tack or sail upwind.

According to the article: “Then, their 36-foot sailboat lost steering and communication abilities about 900 miles off Mexico.”

So they did have it when they left, but lost it later.

Thank you for qualifying that for me...sounds to me like they ought to pull them all off that boat or tow them into port to fix the steering...

A 36 footer hundreds of miles off shore? What could go wrong?

I’ve always said it’s good that I don’t have a boat or an airplane. Sooner or later I’d forget to do something important. And I’m smart enough to know it.

I flew hang-gliders for 10 years. Then quit because I wasn’t thinking fast enough to be safe flying. You have to know and acknowledge your limitations, else you go splat.

The mom said that they saw a large turtle swimming about a week ago and that it was a great experience. The toddlers will not remember this — they could’ve seen one at the San Diego Aquarium too....

Absolutely insane! Why a hundred and fifty years ago they might have loaded the child into a covered wagon and headed for the Oregon trail.

Grow up and look at the real world , it’s not a fairy tale as you see it.

The toddlers will not remember this — they could’ve seen one at the San Diego Aquarium too....

But think of all the family stories for years to come...if the toddlers survive to adulthood, they can spend the rest of their lives listening to Mom and Dad tell them they saw a large turtle when they were too young to remember.
