The cost was raised to the point it was ridiculous. Nope. The restrictions on the number of cattle may have been ridiculous, but the cost per animal month (cow/calf pair counts as 1) is the same for everyone across the board for grazing. Set by federal law at $1.35/ per Animal Unit Month, or AUM. An AUM is the amount of forage needed to sustain one cow and her calf, one horse, or five sheep or goats for a month. The rate's been the same $1.35/AUM since 1986, and takes an act of Congress to change the rate. BLM can't set the rate.
