Well, I didn't see any photos of the shoe in question, but, depending on the shoe type and style, an attack like this could sometimes be classified "assault with a deadly weapon".

I was thinking about how Hillary's future speeches should have 2, then 4, then 8, then 16 shoe throwers until it becomes a big movement. Which made me remember a song:
