Nevada Cattle Rancher Wins 'Range War' With Feds

A Nevada cattle rancher appears to have won his week-long battle with the federal government over a controversial cattle roundup that had led to the arrest of several protesters.

Cliven Bundy went head to head with the Bureau of Land Management over the removal of hundreds of his cattle from federal land, where the government said they were grazing illegally.

Bundy claims his herd of roughly 900 cattle have grazed on the land along the riverbed near Bunkerville, 80 miles northeast of Las Vegas, since 1870 and threatened a "range war" against the BLM on the Bundy Ranch website after one of his sons was arrested while protesting the removal of the cattle.

"I have no contract with the United States government," Bundy said. "I was paying grazing fees for management and that's what BLM was supposed to be, land managers and they were managing my ranch out of business, so I refused to pay."

The federal government had countered that Bundy "owes the American people in excess of $1 million " in unpaid grazing fees and "refuses to abide by the law of land, despite many opportunities over the last 20 years to do so."

However, today the BLM said it would not enforce a court order to remove the cattle and was pulling out of the area.

"Based on information about conditions on the ground, and in consultation with law enforcement, we have made a decision to conclude the cattle gather because of our serious concern about the safety of employees and members of the public," BLM Director Neil Kornze said.

Hero Bundy now with 100s including Militia to go get the cattle. Sheriff fled after announcing BLM caved. Great day for America — bad day for Harry Reid and big government.

You are right that he has lost, not won. They confsicated $900,000 worth of cattle.

And I bet you don’t see anyone’s cattle on that land again.

Just endangered animals and solar panels which will roast thousands of birds in mid-air.

Didn't take long after the link with Reid and the Chicoms was publicized for this to 'go away'.

Drudge had a link to the Infowars story that pointed back to Freeper's connection of Reid, his son and Big Chinese Energy.

Drudge has removed that link and BLM is now gone from the ranch.

Those cattle have been grazing since 1870? Man, talk about aged beef!

Really no specific person owns the land. The government manages public lands, but they don’t own it. It’s even stated in BLM’s title - Bureau of Land Management.

I don’t trust the BLM, they will pull back, wait 2 or 3 weeks and arrest Bundy when is alone and without backup.

Did you read the comments after the story? I think ABC deliberately posted all those irrelevant comments about the ads in order to push the substantive comments off the first page. This really ticks me off!

Agreed. Some people just don’t seem to get the bottom line....until Bundy pays the fees he legally owes, he is stealing from US taxpayers.

As I said in an earlier thread..if the Bundy family were a bunch of stinky leftist hippies doing the exact same thing, many who defend Bundy on this board and media folks like Mr. Hannity would be calling them outlaws and thieves.

You can’t excuse lawbreaking just because you identify and sympathize with the lawbreaker.

"Bundy should pay money if his cattle is grazing on government land."

Since details are thin in this area, I'll reserve judgment.

But one thing is a fact. A sizable amount of stock has been stolen/seized/transfered by the feds. Sounds like they've been paid to me.

There are hundreds of ranchers who own a small amounts of acreage next to public land that they use for grazing, so I doubt this will be the only incident of its kind. Big government means big control, even when it is pointless. The grassland that is open for grazing is probably heartier and more resistant to diseases than the adjoining land that isn’t. The wildlife on the land that is grazed is most likely healthier and more numerous.

Bundy has paid fees to the Nevada county. The real story is why now are they trying to squeeze Bundy off the land.

This is not about fees or cattle or turtles. It’s Harry Reid minions pulling the strings for a business deal with the Chinese.

Yes, let’s see how many fly-overs are performed here on out and how the BLM monitors (surveils) the Bundy property.

Bunkerville founded by Edward Bunker in 1877. His granddaughter married Park Romney. His wife’s brother was the ancestor of Bundy.

The usage began with an understanding that no fees were required, nor would be. Insofar as reasonable fees were introduced, seems he paid them. Problem now seems the fees are changed with intent to drive him out - THAT is intolerable.

Short of outright sale, for which he should have first dibs at equal cost, it should remain open to all use at no cost beyond basic maintenance.
