Beyond the “WTF does The Park Service have a SWAT TEAM?!”, they are trained to deal quickly with one or two untrained rogues.
In this situation, they are out-numbered about 10-1, and many of the protestors are not only armed and military-trained (Note the Navy Seals flag?), but they surround the teams on three sides, and from the high ground, with the only egress deeper into an open desert wash.
The politicos and government mobsters were all watching this closely...
They must have totally shuttered at the thought of their overpaid BLM hired guns starting a shoot war up there with a bunch of armed Americans, complete with a flag waving color guard on horse back...
I've had chats with NPS Rangers on the subject on a few occasions (a ranger happened to be teaching a first course I was attending a few years ago, another time I happened to bump into a ranger when hiking in a national park). In theory, their main task is prevent marijuana farmers from setting up shop in the national parks.
Supposedly they're pretty well trained.
