The San Mateo County bomb squad destroyed a suspected pipe bomb Thursday in Half Moon Bay, California and later discovered the supposed threat was just a set of paintbrushes, authorities said.

If it was nuclear, it might endanger Mountain View or Palo Altoe just across the San Andreas fault on the ridgeline.

Just how? Fallout? You're talking 15 miles away on the other side of a mountain range. San Mateo is closer, but that's still 10 miles. There's no way a suitcase nuke would do any damage. The blast radiation would miss them. As long as the people are up on their iodine (which is unlikely these days), and as long as they wear a dust mask, even the fallout hazard is not that great.
