I think someone in my extended family has a curious claim to fame -- in that he apparently worked as a custodian in Lew Alcindor's grade school in New York City and convinced the tall, gangly kid that he'd be a great basketball player.
Lew Alcindor went to Power Memorial HS in NYC. IIRC, It was one of the more academically competitive Catholic high schools in the city at the time.
A friend’s brother used to take the train to NYC to watch Power Memorial’s games after his school’s team concluded its bb season. I remember hearing about Alcindor from when he was a h.s. sophomore, I guess.
