Coming home from Asia, Barack Obama is obviously going through another rough patch in his presidency. But this time, it could be more dangerous: He is perilously close to becoming a lame duck 33 months before he leaves office. That is bad for him, bad for the country and bad for the world.
Obama's second term is a total aberration. Resisted by obstructionists among Republicans and plagued by his own mistakes, the first 12 months after re-election were a bust. Why he and his team didn't take more care in the rollout of the Affordable Care Act website will remain one of the great mysteries for historians.
But it has now become equally puzzling why he has not become more sure-footed in foreign affairs. He is one of the brightest men ever to occupy the office, and yet his learning curve has been among the flattest. Talking to players on the world stage -- most of whom still want him to succeed -- one finds them genuinely rattled, worried about a lack of national will and operational competence.
Not to overdo his analogy, but the years since have brought a notable string of strikeouts. The administration would vigorously disagree, but just how much success can it genuinely claim in Syria, Egypt, Libya or even Iraq? Or the Russian reset? Or Ukraine?

Yep. At least Carter had the nuclear submarine thing under his belt. Plus, he was very good at personally scheduling the White House tennis court. There was not a single dust-up over tennis court scheduling that I can recall. Not one.
There is only one, and that is his credentials from Columbia and Harvard. Set aside, for the moment, the allegations that his credentials were obtained at best supportively, at worst fraudulently. At one time, someone with such credentials would have to have been "one of the brightest men," since otherwise the credentials would not have been earned. Sadly, that has not been the case for the last generation at least, perhaps longer--and that is even forgetting the perpetual progressive bias that removes any opportunity for a classical Aristotelian education at either institution.
So Gergen sees his credentials and is fooled into believing that they stand for what they claim to stand for. It is those outside the inner circle who see the credentials for what they are, which is sadly a smokescreen to cover, not the brightness, but the ignorance. And I say that with no joy; with all my soul, I wish it were not so, but it is so, and we must deal with the world as it is, not as we would wish it to be.
Grant and Harding were way ahead of BO in intelligence by at least one measure. They may not have been the best presidents, but they were quite brilliant as a general and a businessman, respectively.
why not he’s been a lame schmuck the other portion of his presidency.
Because we have no empirical data that would indicate the intellect of Barry, we are forced to take into account the body of work of his presidency. And by that standard, Obama is an utter failure. By almost any metric possible, Obama has had no success as president. Everything Obama has done as president has been a complete disaster.
Obama had his presidency handed to him on a silver platter with a super majority in Congress and what did he accomplish? Obamacare? That disaster that was ultimately rammed through on the backside of bribes and political graft?
In six years as president the only thing he is really known for is Obamacare which is a disaster. The economy is in a shambles. We have added more debt than all previous presidents. More food stamps. Less people working. Not one country in a stronger allied position. The world is on the precipice.
So, yeah, Carter was bright academically, but there is nothing to show Obama is even half as bright, and his body of work strongly indicates that he his quite the dullard whom Gergen himself says is unwilling to learn.
THE David Rodham Gergen?
Not too much to complain about if the President cannot enact another piece of collectivist legislation. He still can do plenty with the alphabet agencies though.
Really, brightest based on what? We have yet to see those transcripts.
He is one of the brightest men to ever occupy the office...
How many times is this lie going to be repeated? We don’t believe it now, we didn’t believe it then and it makes you, Gergen, the psychophantic assclown I always thought you to be.
Gotta keep those cocktail invitations coming now don’t we?
Let the cleansing wave gather and sweep these vermin from the heights of power. Come November I beg you COME !
In all fairness, the man inherited a lot of problems from the previous administration:
His
Stop reading from that point
donchano, all democrat presidents are above average
Get up off your knees, Gergen.
He’s not nearly as lame as I would like him to be. He still has the power to do a lot more damage. It’s mind-boggling that no one in this country has grabbed the reins and begun a
move to legally oust him.
Until some records are released proving otherwise, I will continue to think that is one of the dumbest statements ever made!
No, your not missing anything. Gergen made an empty, foolish statement with nothing to back it up.
LMAO
Why not? Mom probably just flopped at the guy's place.
Yeah, I threw up in my mouth a bit when I read this line...King of the Idiots leading the idiot population..
