NJ man shoots 11-year-old nephew dead while demonstrating laser sight on his forehead

An 11-year-old New Jersey boy was shot dead over the weekend when his uncle was showing off a number of guns that he thought were unloaded, and pointed one with a laser sight at the child’s forehead.

The Pocono Record reported that State Police responded to reports of shots fired in a gated community in Delaware Township at around 5:35 p.m. on Saturday.

According to a police report, the 11-year-old child was visiting the home of his grandfather. The boy allegedly asked his uncle, 34-year-old Chad Olm, who lives in the basement, to see his gun collection.

Olm told police that he opened his security safe and began showing his weapons to the nephew, and his son, who was also present. He insisted that he did not keep the guns loaded.

After letting the boys handle three handguns — a .357 Magnum revolver, a .22 revolver and a 9 mm — he then pulled out a Glock 27 .40-caliber handgun that was equipped with a laser sight.

Olm stated that he did not check to see if there was a round in the chamber, but said that the handgun did not have a magazine in it. Olm said that he pointed the laser at the walls and ceiling. And then he pointed it at his nephew.

“Look, you have a red dot on your forehead,” Olm recalled one of the boys saying.

Olm said that when the nephew reached out for the gun, he pulled the trigger. A single bullet struck the child above the eye, causing him to start bleeding and fall over.

Following the gun safety rules would have prevented this.

You can't fix stupid.

Electrical Repair Rule Number One is SWITCH THE POWER OFF AT THE BREAKER BOX

#2. Test anyway (there may be more than one branch in the box).

#3. After testing, brush the back of your finger against the bare wire (if live, it will sting/tingle, but your twitch reflex will be away from the wire as your hand spasms closed.

#4. Avoid ladders, or have a helper. A major cause of electrical worker death/disability is the head injury from the fall following a zap.

I could never point a gun loaded or not at anyone. But how the ???? can someone point at someone the love, forehead and and then PULL the trigger?

I would say it’s premeditated murder if the gun is empty and murder if not. Inexcusable. I have grown up with guns an know that a gun is only as dangerous as the one who’s holding it.

Yet ammo for liberal gun-haters to use against us.

Exactly. According to liberals, competent and responsible firearm owners should be punished of the actions of incompetent and irresponsible ones.

By their logic, everyone's driver's license should also be suspended every time some drunk or reckless driver kills somebody in a car wreck. Or perhaps I shouldn't be giving them any ideas?

This Olm character seems like he’s too stupid to live, never mind own a gun. The fact that he’s in his 30’s and still lives with his parents tells us everything we need to know about him.

I think I’ll avoid #3. But #2 and #4 are good reminders.

His own son was down there with them. Perhaps he din’t want that young child to see that.

Man asks bystander
“does your dog bite?”
Man pets dog sitting by bystander
Growl,gnaw,chew,scream, pull back hand....
I thought you said you dog does not bite
That sir is not my dog

Or something like that- inspector Clouseau

That was my thought too, it bears repeating.

“The damage that could be caused by not adhering to these policies would be more than I could bear.”

I’m in that boat, I could’t begin to imagine being this guy.

There’s a reason we’re all told to treat all guns as loaded.

That’s not a common mistake, that’s called mental retardation and that person shouldn’t be around firearms.

Most firearms are extremely basic in their operation. You don’t need a college degree or anything.

You must have a military background like me?

It’s drilled into you to keep that barrel pointed in a safe direction at all times.

Thanks for reinforcing it again. Some people obviously don’t get the message first time around, perhaps not the 30th time either.

“A friend of a friend was showing off his fancy H&K bullpup years ago. I asked him to show me that it was unloaded. He argued that it WAS unloaded. I left - the guy had more money than brains.”

Being obsessive about following gun handling rules saved my butt from a nasty accident. A friend and I came back from deer hunting with our revolvers. We both had the same gun but I had just had an action job done on mine and we were comparing trigger pulls in his parent’s basement. Both guns were empty of course with my friend’s 6 rounds sitting on the table near the ammo box. I went to take a whiz and his mother called us to dinner. When I came out his gun was just where he left it with the 6 rounds sitting on the table. I picked it up, cocked it and took aim at the water heater to try the trigger pull again. I had about 4# of pressure on the 5 # trigger but was bothered by not checking to see if it was loaded. This felt silly since the gun was in the exact same place as when I left, as was 6 rounds, and it was less than a minute since it was last checked. Never the less I uncocked it, opened the cylinder and was astonished to find 6 LIVE ROUNDS. In the minute I was gone my friend had reloaded his gun with ammo from the box and left the original 6 on the table. I was never again tempted to handle a gun without making sure it was unloaded every time it left my hand.

All guns are loaded until they have been fully field stripped on your workbench. This guy is guilty of terminal stupidity. Should go to jail without passing go.

#3 is to do before you grab a “dead” wire to work on it. Brush first, then contact with confidence.
