Pope Francis demands 'legitimate redistribution' of wealth

VATICAN CITY (AP) - Pope Francis called Friday for governments to redistribute wealth to the poor in a new spirit of generosity to help curb the "economy of exclusion" that is taking hold today.

Francis made the appeal during a speech to U.N. Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon and the heads of major U.N. agencies who met in Rome this week.

Latin America's first pope has frequently lashed out at the injustices of capitalism and the global economic system that excludes so much of humanity, though his predecessors have voiced similar concerns.

On Friday, Francis called for the United Nations to promote a "worldwide ethical mobilization" of solidarity with the poor in a new spirit of generosity.

church ownership of land worldwide (not just the land on which churches sit) is disingenuous

It's not disingenuous. It's that the assets, even if they were on the scale of Soros's assets, would be insignificant in addressing poverty, which is, as a classic black entrepreneur and motivational speaker wrote, "a disease of the mind."

What's disingenuous is people who know better proposing that the Vatican be dispossessed, à la Henry VIII, as a real-world solution to anything. It seems to have more to do with envy (which is not a virtue) than with a charitable result.

Historically, it was Protestant countries who advanced capitalism and increased prosperity. Catholic countries typically resisted capitalism as something suspect and foreign, and consequently ended up with wealthy oligarchies and masses of poor people.

As Catholic intellectuals and missionaries began to feel guilty about this situation, they blamed the capitalism that they had rejected, and began to promote Marxist liberation theology.

Catholics do tend to have a socialist bias, and most of the pioneers of capitalism were Jews and Protestants. These are - of course - generalizations, and generalizations have exceptions, but I think this was generally true.

We hear that every single time this man puts his foot in his mouth. Yes the press sucks. He knows that and continues to make these types of statements.

He means what he says.

There’s a difference between redistribution dictated by force of law and the barrel of a gun, as it is now, and by the charity of the human heart, as it once was and should always be. I’m not completely clear as to whether the pope has made that distinction here.

Glad you know it - and yes, the Pope most definitely means what he says and not what the MSM says what he says.

"Selling assets is never a sound policy for solving the problems of the poor. Sell all of the Vatican art, give the proceeds to the poor of the world, and it would be all spent in a week or two, if that."

So is money redistributed by governmental force. It promotes dependency and furthers exploitative government autocracy. The Pope is showing signs of liberation theology which the church has previously denied.

The Pope is wrong. There is no generosity in redistributing other people's money, nor is there any virtue in that action. While I give very generously to efficient charities of my choice with my own money, I would be disgusted at any suggestion that I should compel others to give to the charities that I choose.

Isn't he venturing from his role as a spiritual leader into territory he's not qualified to navigate?

He is unwittingly giving every tyrant and would-be tyrant an excuse for their tyranny calling for Marxism and Collectivism which theory and history shows creates poverty and misery and violates the very God-given rights and blessings he should be promoting. Forcing one's "dream" upon others leads to oppression, like MLK's efforts instigating government interference with a person's God-given freedom to choose or "discriminate."

The Pope's message, like that of MLK, is a call for an end to freedom to the extent that forced equality demands government interference and coercion. But as Milton Friedman said, a society that puts equality before freedom will have neither, while a society that puts freedom ahead of equality will have a great deal of both.

......Get use to the idea that the Catholic Church has become just another non-profit feeding off the government teat, a much more reliable revenue stream then their aging congregation.....

Does not this transference of taxpayer dollars make all of US Catholic by proxy? Now if only those Catholic Bishops can get their Catholic Boner to pass amnesty then the empty American Catholic pews can begin to be filled again? It is like Communism use up people and then need to find a new source of bodies to fund the racket. Yes, I am tired of being used by a religious organization for their political purposes. And I would feel the same way and did when Billy Graham was out there shouting praise all over the pervert Clintons.

I respect the Pope, even tho I am not Catholic.

However—I would politely point out to The Church that they have told their believers for centuries that they should produce “as many children as God will give them”.

God also provides ‘many children’ for feral cats, but we push for spay and neutering for our pets.

The poorest in the world, based upon my 70+++ years of life are primarily those who have continued to have children they cannot feed, or support in expected standards for their area.

Ordering ME or others to continue to support such behavior is wrong.

I don’t have a lot, but I certainly have more than many ‘poor’ people in the USA & certainly more than those in Africa & other areas where they live in huts & scrape to survive. I don’t live where Boko Haram is marauding, but I do live where the EPA interferes with too many things. I confess to not always being able to tell the difference between the 2 groups.

I digress....

I will fight against those who demand that I ‘give up my ‘wealth’ because there are so many poor people.

The factors are far more complex than that. In the USA, we have had over 50 years of ‘helping the poor’ under the label WELFARE.

It is now so out of hand with the give-aways & payments to welfare ‘poor’ people that they live better than I ever did.

I took my own PBJ sandwiches to school...even thru high school. I bought my first car with money I EARNED at a JOB. I was just shy of 18 y/o. I bought my first house at age 26 in 1966 with $5000 from my mother’s estate. I bought the only car I ever bought NEW a year prior to the purchase of the house. I drove that car for over 444,000 miles & sold it to a guy in Sweden who restored it. It still ran just fine & I sometimes wish I hadn’t sold it.

I own 2 vehicles now -—and one has over 204,000 miles & is almost 36 years old. The other has almost 350,000 miles on it & is 39 years old.

I still have 2 walnut lamps & a small table I have had since the late 50’s. I still have clothes & a cedar chest I bought in the late 60’s. Kitchen utensils, furniture, jewelry that I obtained in the same time period. A kitchen table & chairs I bought used that are older than I am. An oak desk that is almost 100 years old. 3 used file cabinets that are from the 50’s.

I am not going to roll over for declarations from the Pope or any politician that “I should give away my accumulation’ of items which I have taken good care of because someone else is ‘poorer’ than I.

I fully recognize that Donald Trump & Magic Johnson & Oprah & Bill Gates are far richer than I am. I have NEVER made such a demand on them to help ME. I NEVER would.

I also NEVER had a poor man sign my paycheck for my labor. I worked at many a job that was ‘out of the mainstream’ for a female, but I was able to keep my assets.

I—and ONLY I-— will determine where they go when I die.

It is outright theft to say that I have too much & someone else should obtain what I have acquired.

NO ONE is going to change my mind.

Sorry, your Holiness. You have to open your eyes about why there are so many POOR people.

BTW- I never had any kids.

The ONLY LEGITIMATE redistribution of benefits is via the supply and demand of the voluntary free market economy.

Even a call for “legitimate redistribution of benefits" is vague enough to make tyrants and would-be tyrants think they've got support for their Marxist/Collectivist schemes.

Once again the anti-Catholic MSM seeks to mislead with a fake headline to advance their own agenda.

And once again Francis has shot himself in the foot. If the Pope didn't make a habit of making marxist friendly remarks before the UN and making liberally leftist comments that need a positive spin by die-hard catholics, then maybe you might have a point.

One or two comments might be overlooked. Eight or ten remarks might be chalked up to a language translation that didn't quite get done right. But dozens and dozens of remarks and speeches over many weeks and months make it clear:

The Pope is a Marxist.

Well said; you were responsible for yourself and made sure that you took care of all that was necessary for your life. Now, our “betters” come along and say they can do it better and take the fruits of your life by force. The Pope is tragically wrong and gives moral cover to those who will obtain power to “redistribute” wealth and profit in the exercise.

“yes, the Pope most definitely means what he says and not what the MSM says what he says.”

Sure, but he keeps saying these things knowing what the media does with them.

He thinks redistribution of wealth is a good thing.
