Can D.C. survive 'unstoppable' ice melt?

WASHINGTON -- What will become of the nation's capital?

The huge West Antarctic ice sheet is slowly collapsing, and two groups of scientists say the melting is now an unstoppable event.

Melting ice will cause sea levels to rise higher than initially projected, which is cause for concern for D.C.-area scientists and local urban planners.

The rising seas will affect local treasures, including the Chesapeake Bay and the country's iconic monuments along the National Mall.

All of DC could slide into the ocean, and I could give a ratas behind...

I would fee sad about the loss of the smithsonian and the library of congress and some of the monuments and cemetaries...

But that is about it..

That’s easy - just erect a force-field around what you want to protect. Don’t these libtards have a clue?!

The studies say if it happens it’s going to be over 300 years.

Pretty sure if they discover that the sea is rising 5 inches a year they can erect some dikes to save us all.

Chicken Little called. She said never mind.

The irony being that the Chesapeake Bay was formed by the last great ice melt. And, of course, there probably won't be a Washington Monument in the thousand years it will take for this to happen (assuming it is happening).

That is so stupid.

The water from the melting Antarctic ice sheets is down at the bottom of the world. There is no way it can come uphill so far as to be a threat to Washington DC.

The only way that water could flood DC is if someone turned the world upside down and it all flowed down to Washington.

Some people have no scientific knowledge at all. What idiots!

I think Washington DC should be renamed out of respect for George Washington.

Maybe some Freepers can clarify something for me.

This ice is *already* in the water. Ice is less dense than water so it has a higher volume. So, per Archimedes principle of displacement - when it melts wouldn’t the sea level *lower*???

How is it different than filling a glass to the top with ice, then fill with water to the top...and when the ice melts the water mark falls?
