The pre-WWI French soldiers - the "poilus" - "hairy guys" - were pound for pound the bravest soldiers in Europe.

They were wiped out almost to a man in the big battles. The cowards, the unfit, and the few survivors bred the next generation. That's the problem.

also, they had losses in 1940 as well.

360,000 dead or wounded,
1,900,000 captured
