The official opening of the 9/11 museum brought President Obama to New York and sparked fresh reminders of the horror of that awful day. The president called the site “sacred” and gave a moving speech about the American spirit, saying, “Like the great wall and bedrock that embrace us today, nothing can ever break us.”
It is the right thing to say and the right place to say it. But is it true? Is the American spirit really unbreakable?
I have my doubts.
There are many examples that say our spirit is breaking if not already broken. One involves a Wall Street Journal report that, six years after the housing bubble popped and sank the economy, federal officials want to lower mortgage standards again so more people can buy houses that they can’t afford. Been there, done that would seem to be the logical response, but the idea is gaining momentum because so few people can legitimately qualify for credit that the only way to spur housing growth is to junk the standards.
The same thing is happening in schools. Americans overwhelmingly agree that our educational system, once the envy of the world, is now lagging.
The cry to challenge students spawned a movement to raise the bar through the Common Core curriculum, but it is now grinding to a halt in New York and other places. The problem: Too many students are failing the tougher tests, making teachers look bad, parents unhappy—and politicians nervous.
So the standards are being shuffled aside, and self-esteem is back as the new measure of success. More students can appear to be learning and, presumably, that will make the adults happy, at least temporarily.
Because this retreat from rigor in favor of cultural “social promotion” is playing out in a million different ways...

* EPA rules on type of fuel used to heat the food. Proper garbage disposal.
* OSHA - staff must wear asbestos clothing and rubber gloves
* Dept. of Agriculture - Meat must be PETA approved, free range, no bug diet, never lived near Clive Bundy’s range, and must be Halal killed. Must be a reduced-fart food.
* Bureau of Land Management - must be feed only Govt grass
* Dept. of Interior - Free range cattle and chickens
* Dept. of Health & Human Services - Meat must only come from Sebelius’ Kansas
* Dept of ICE/Homeland Security. Foreign beef must have proper immigration papers unless from Mexico (they must have a free Swim the Rio Grande permit)
* Dept. of Transportation - Taco cart/stand must meet DOT wheels and transportation fuels, wear and mileage standards
Must have federal, state, local, and Mexican license plates.
* FCC - any radio must meet federal standards for “fairness doctrine” talk shows
* SEC - taco stand owner must file 10K and 8K annual forms even if they are not a stock-holding company
* IRS - taco stand owners must document every expenditure for the business and keep those records for 20 years
* Bureau of Weights and Measures - all beef patties must weigh exactly the same even if they are small, medium, large, or supersized
and those are just the govt organizations, federal, state and local who will destroy one taco stand. Obama - YES I DID!

And even those who perhaps voted for Zeroman in the first election but recognized the damage that he is striving so hard to inflict on the nation and abstained from voting for his re-election won't do anything more than remain silent either out of embarrassment or lingering misguided partisan loyalty.

Lagging as a snail would lag in a race against a Cheetah...or even a turtle. I have said it many times, today’s university graduates who major in history wouldn’t stand a chance of passing my eighth grade history final. Some people say that that sort of classical education is not needed but why then do we have people spending years and much borrowed money to obtain a degree in a subject and still know nothing about it? I used to be told that a degree in history was useless unless you intended to teach history, is that what is happening, people who know nothing about it teaching others to know nothing about it?
An honest high school education would be far more beneficial than a phony degree signifying nothing.
I WONDER IF AMERICANS HAVE LOST THE WILL TO DO ANYTHING. SURE SEEMS LIKE IIT.
