BALTIMORE —Authorities have made an arrest in connection with a hit-and-run in west Baltimore on Tuesday that killed a woman and a toddler and injured a 7-year-old girl.
Baltimore police said late Wednesday night that they arrested 28-year-old Lucresha Mints in connection with the case.
Detectives said the intentional hit-and-run happened at Franklin and Monroe streets just after 9 p.m. Tuesday following an argument between Mints and 25-year-old Latoya Skipwith.
Police said the fight got so heated that Mints got into her car, aimed it at Skipwith and floored it, driving down the sidewalk and striking Skipwith, 2-year-old Joshua Carter and an unidentified 7-year-old girl as they sat on the steps of a church.
Witnesses told 11 News the victims ended up in a nearby stairwell, where on Wednesday, the boy's father sat in shock. He was nearby when the incident happened.
"I got the word and ran around the corner, and once I came, I seen my son a mess. It just hurt me so bad, I just broke down," father Joshua Carter Sr. said. "I just snapped."
Skipwith was killed, and police confirmed Wednesday that Joshua also died as a result of his injuries. Relatives of the victims told 11 News that Skipwith and Joshua were cousins.
The 7-year-old girl was taken to Johns Hopkins Hospital with non-life-threatening injuries. Police said she is expected to survive.
Police told 11 News that family members said the hit-and-run was sparked by an argument and that Mints knew her victims. Police said they were able to recover the vehicle used in the hit-and-run, which was a gray Acura.
"She took two lives from one family -- two babies. That's my youngest sister and my little cousin. He was only 2 years old," said Skipwith's sister, Rhonda Bryant, through tears.
"My little grandbaby -- he was the love of my life," said Helen Virginia Whitfield, Joshua's grandmother, who was still trying to comprehend Wednesday how someone could do something like that.
Police have not yet provided details on what the argument between Skipwith and Mints was about.
Earlier in the day Wednesday, relatives were upset with police because of what they called a lack of communication from detectives about whether the suspect was in custody or not.
"Somebody’s got to give us some answers. They owe it to us," said Joshua’s great-grandmother, Elissha Jefferson.
Police said at the time that they were doing everything they could.
"In this case, we definitely empathize with the families. We're speaking about an instance in which a 2-year-old child and an adult victim were killed last night, where a vehicle was used as an intentional weapon to cause this homicide. We're reaching out to the public and we’re doing our due diligence on our part. We're really asking for the public's help," Baltimore City Police Department Sgt. Jarron Jackson said.
Homicide detectives are still investigating.
Charges against Mints haven't been announced yet, but she's no stranger to police. Court records show earlier this month, she was arrested on first- and second-degree assault charges.
Bye.
Catching up here...We got two 98'ers riding the lightning off racist posts?
Probably your best play at this point. One thing that has never varied is intolerance for racism. Just because the left has co-opted the term does not mean that the actual evil is all gone away. That mess has no place here. Were it otherwise, I would not be here.
If you are straight up, you have nothing to fear if Jim is alerted to a problematic comment. I generally let the “abuse” but take care of that.
I thought you were taking your marbles and going somewhere else.
Agree there’s no place for it but would like to express a distaste for his comments with reply and maybe swing his viewpoints in a different direction. There is always a possibility :-)
Marbles was tongue in cheek to bring a bit of humor into the fray.
Pretty much anything can be a weapon. Peanuts given to someone who is extremely allergic can kill. High heel shoes have been used to murder. Ban strippers, no wait they are all paying their way thru nursing school by stripping.
It seems to me that the methods used to murder are getting more horrific with each passing day. The excuses used to justify murder are more trivial each day. Collateral damage is just that, a two year old is collateral damage.
We have all had an instant where the impulse to hurt or kill someone else has come and gone without being acted on, the problem is that some people do act on them. Life is becoming cheaper with each passing day and will continue until the Second Coming.
I see a couple of things that I believe cause much of this type of action. One is heavy drug use, it rewires the brain permanently making impulse control harder if not impossible for the afflicted. A prime example is our esteemed president who while supposedly going after a dangerous terrorist, kills an American 16 year old. Any remorse coming from the White House, any condemnation that amounted to anything from any branch of government that has the power to do anything about it. Not enough to notice.
I also think that we ignore the fact that blacks in Africa kill each other and also target and kill other races so often that it is not even newsworthy. In Rwanda blacks of one tribe hacked to death blacks of another with machetes and farm tools, in the hundreds of thousands. Blacks in South Africa killed white farmers and raped and killed their wives. These are facts not racist BS and we ignore them at our own peril.
Read a little of ‘White girl bleed alot’, and see the reality of today’s world.
I don’t see myself as a racist, I tend to judge people by their actions, and have met an know people of all races that are good people and do their best to live good lives. But there are among us in all races the hard hearted and the murderous, that one race seems to display these traits more often than others is just the reality.
We must ban all assault cars
We did, anyway. Comments are gone now, but I often check join dates of the worst posters at FR, and 1998, 2000 and 2008 seem to be especially well-represented.
Last gasp of the Great Clinton lovers, the freaks spawned by the scorched-earth War on America because a Republican won, and the no-way-I’m-voting-for-a-Morman crowd.
Beyond that, Doc Savage was nuked. Instead of the "banned or suspended" page, you get the "nobody by that name" page
Dang, he got the “Stalin” treatment.
Decent thought. Let us pray...
Considering you’re a newbie here - joined on 2/6/14 - we don’t need a lecture from you on how Jim Rob should use our donations to run this site!!!
“We must ban all assault cars”
I agree with one caveat; replace assault automobiles with semi-automobiles fitted with three-gallon gas tanks.
What those individuals said was pulled before I saw it, or I'd likely be berating them for it while defending their right to be wrong.
I've seen a website with commentary that noted something like "comment collapsed by community" instead of pulling the comment. You could click on the notation and view the offending comment. How difficult would that be to add here?
Double zots. Wow..and class of 1998.
That's right. Just because one donates does not mean that one thereby has any influence or control over how the site is run. People who don't like it can leave. Or just stop donating.
However, it's getting hard to know where the line is. One sees comments like "Typical Amish" and that doesn't get the zot. One sees threads on black crime, with comments expressing unhappiness about the level of black crime, and that doesn't get the zot. One can even post about the observably lower level of intellectual achievements of the black community (lower SAT scores, no hard-science Nobel prizes, etc), and not get the zot.
More than posting a racist comment. It involved the death of a two year old child.
Pretty darn low.
