U.S. Jobless Claims Drop as Labor Market Continues to Improve

WASHINGTON—The number of Americans filing claims for new jobless benefits fell last week and remained near prerecession levels, an indication the labor market continues to improve.

Initial claims for unemployment benefits dropped by 27,000 to a seasonally adjusted 300,000 in the week ended May 24, the Labor Department said Thursday. Economists surveyed by The Wall Street Journal estimated claims would fall to 319,000 from the prior week. First-time claims for the May 17 week were revised up slightly to 327,000

Meanwhile, a measure of claims that evens out weekly volatility—the four-week moving average—declined by 11,250 last week to 311,500. That was the lowest level for the average since August 2007.

Many economists consider claims below 400,000 a sign of a generally improving labor market.

Only when a Democrat is in office.

The number of jobless claims would have been HIGHER, but severe storms kept many people from reporting their status.

I’m no rocket surgeon but I can tell you why more people get jobs right now. It is SPRING. Construction season has started, landscaping season has started, all kinds of jobs are available right away in the Spring.

“Many economists consider claims below 400,000 a sign of a generally improving labor market.”

Once a famous guy says on TV that it’s at least 97% of economists, the science is settled.

“WSJ is no longer any different than the NYT.”

They haven’t been for a long time. I have received quite the backlash when I have even suggest in the past that they WSJ is not conservative.

There’s still quite a difference between the news and editorial pages, at least in my view.

Weekly numbers can be volatile. That's why you look at the 4 week MA which is currently the lowest since August 2007:

How about that dismal drop of 1% in GDP, WSJ? Stop cheerleading for this phony “recovery.” No one believes it but the gamblers and scammers on Wall St.

The Wall Street Journal used to have the reputation for having craven leftism in the news section, and conservativism in the editorial section.

Now they are craven leftists, throughout.

I will consider believing the stuff about job employment when the eligible work force numbers are back close to a more reasonable extrapolated number.

The phony cap that started in 2008 is insulting. BLS.gov, data tools > top picks > civilian labor force

On a day with a downward revision showing the economy contracted in Q1.

Are they gonna repeal the law of gravity now too?
