Although he was a private when he was first captured by the Taliban, Sergeant Bowe Bergdahl was promoted twice in captivity and is scheduled for another promotion to staff sergeant.
CNNs Barbara Starr reports that a defense official confirmed that Bergdahl is scheduled for a promotion to the rank of staff sergeant later in June of this year.
Bergdahl was a private when he went missing and was promoted to the rank of specialist in June 2010. He was promoted in June 2011 to the rank of sergeant.

He’ll get all his back-pay.
Hasan got a promotion, too.
When I was in the military, you had to go through a “school” before you qualified to make any NCO position.
In Obama’s America, being a traitor is considered a good thing
Also gets you rescued, and any number of good men killed.
Under this Administration, I would think he would get a battlefield promotion to Brigadier General....
Yeah, what happened to the NCO Schools? You might be able to make E-5 without the school, but surely you'd have to complete it before making E-6/Staff Sergeant?
After 9/11, I re-enlisted. I had to re-take the school before I could sew on SSgt.
Yep. He's getting special treatment.

The SRM keeps refering to him as a Sgt. First Class. I kept thinking he looked too young to get tot that pay grade. Turns out they know as much about rank as they do guns. The guy was an E-3, or PFC, when he deserted, apparently.
This reads like these are automatic promotions based upon nothing more than time in rank. Are there no more evaluations and recommendations?
If we had a real SecDef this wouldn’t be happening. We have a lap dog as a SecDef. We really cannot expect that Obama and Hagle will command any respect from our warriors. The sad fact is that our enemies have no respect for the either.
Well since they considered him a POW and not a deserter SOP is to promote them on the minimum time schedule as a way to honor their sacrifice.Nothing new with that, now that he is back however I doubt the automatic promotion occurs.
Heck, make him Czar of Traitors.
We had a young friend who was killed by an IED in the same province that monster was helping the taliban build IEDs. Makes me wonder.
When I was in, you couldn’t make Corporal without going through Primary Leadership Development Course. To get Staff Sgt, you had to do BNCOC, and SFC required ANCOC.
Now apparently all you need to do is show up; you don’t even need to participate in your unit or demonstrate leadership.
They might want to put that on hold.

It’s a POW thing. In a normal situation you have to have the points, the school(PLDC for E-5 and BNOC for E-6, ANOC for E-7 etc), plus time in grade(time in grade is usually automatic until E-4, after which a lot more is considered). But since he was considered a POW he received promotions on a minimal time schedule, as an honor usually and for his family.
