Anger Explodes Over Treatment of Bergdahl’s Release as Veterans, Troops Call Him a Deserter

For all the yellow ribbons strewn across his hometown in Idaho and the gratitude expressed by his parents in an emotional visit to the White House on Saturday, it’s looking increasingly unlikely that Army Sgt. Bowe Bergdahl will receive a hero’s welcome when he returns to the United States after nearly five years in Taliban captivity.

From military forums across the country, a groundswell of anger is rising over the Obama administration’s silence on perhaps the most controversial question surrounding the deal that freed Bergdahl in exchange for five senior Taliban members: Was he a deserter?

So far, the U.S. government has shied away from the long-nagging question, which raged anew Monday with growing clamor on the Internet about the circumstances of Bergdahl’s disappearance from his unit’s small forward position in Afghanistan on June 30, 2009.

Military-related blogs, Twitter accounts and Facebook pages were filled with screeds from commenters accusing Bergdahl of being a “traitor” or a Taliban “collaborator.” The online publication The Daily Beast published a nearly 2,000-word first-person account by a former Army infantry officer who said he was privy to details of Bergdahl’s disappearance and who stated flatly that “he was a deserter, and soldiers from his own unit died trying to track him down.”

The mother of one of six soldiers who’ve been identified as being killed in circumstances related to the search for Bergdahl was furious over the opaque handling of the case, telling Army Times that the Pentagon “really owes the parents of these fallen soldiers the truth.”

But instead of addressing the desertion issue head-on, complained many military analysts and war veterans, the Obama administration is allowing the debate to fester, only deepening the skepticism of current and former service members who demand to know how Bergdahl left his unit,...

excellent take and to add...the CIA operative that was outed disagreed with the plan vehemently, as did Jay Carney.

There needs to be a thorough MILITARY , non civilian , non political , public investigation . Prominently featuring the testimony of the soldiers that served with him and were a party to the days leading up to and after his disappearance.

Which will promptly lead the MSM and DU to say he was "Swift Boated", and give him a spring board to run for office as a military hero.

Not that I disagree - it's just that these people are so obvious.

The only thing that currently elected repubs will do is to rant on such Obama matters to keep the donations coming in for reelection. And hopefully their rants will negatively affect Obama’s polling numbers such that a democrat opponent will have a hard time associating and run I g with Obama policies. There will be no real change this fall, even if the repubs take the senate. I’ve only heard one senate candidate state that Obama should be impeached, Brogdon in Oklahoma, but he is running a distant third in the field so he has to do whatever.

I really dont know what the solution is. However, we have learned one thing over the past six years that this president and his administration can break a lot of laws or act illegally and nothing happens to the top tier folks. Nothing. They are just riding it out to the end.

If this president allows hardened, murderous terrorists out of prison to swap for a deserter, stand by for near the end of his term when he issues a wave of pardons for who knows what. And the repubs will stand by and watch. Hey, it’s all about the presidential library at that point, right?

Hewitt quoted servicemen from the scene who attested that he was tracked by drone and other surveillance for weeks after he deserted. The government knew where this guy was at all times, he was apparently never in danger.

First I have heard of that. I'm not discounting it, but it would be good to attach a name to who said what in the interest of credibility

The key here is his old man cryptically declaring how “proud he was of his son trying to help the Afghan people”.

Really bizarre thing to say.

I think the administration will spin it as PFC Bergdahl and his father were both just “acting” to appease his captors and hes not really a traitor. They will trot them out to verify it and condemn those who dared question him. Otherwise this will likely be the biggest blunder of his presidency.

Thank You F15Eagle for the correction. Have never been perfect and thus am not infallible. Sometimes am right and sometimes am wrong. Guess it all depends on whether or not God is or is not sending the thoughts am thinking. Sometimes the 'chatter box' is there too and then sometimes am thinking the 'chatter box' has control of my typing and that is definitely not good.

I call BS!.....a member of ‘good standing’ in an OPC church would not be praising ‘allah’ as he did !!!!!

I am not buying this ‘pastor’ & his version of the parents.

Something is very rotten.

It’s imperative that we prevent a third Obama term with Hillary - the country won’t survive.

Interesting!

Couple this with not notifying Congress and there’s two (most recent) reasons to impeach...

There’s one poster who has been all over the place, on every thread, with this stuff defending the Bergdahls. And I’m sure the Bergdahl family actually were members in good standing of this Presbyterian church. Look how anti-American the positions of these churches are. There is a hate-America/leftist/peace nut current that is very strong among them, and I think that was originally where the Bergdahls were coming from.

However, I think Daddy Bergdahl may have become a Muslim subsequently. His traitor son was announced to have formally become a Muslim in 2010, and information leaked yesterday (to the British press!) from the hospital in Germany that is “treating” him said that he had converted to Islam, and that he is now refusing to speak English.

And I think his father, who appears to have a track record of following his son, probably did so too, no doubt for the same reason his son did: it was the most anti-American thing he could think of doing. That’s why he recited that Islamic prayer in the WH, first thing, upon which Obama smiled.
