Why reparations for slavery could help boost the economy
Reuters ^ | June 4, 2014 | Michael Maiello

In the May 21 issue of The Atlantic, Ta-Nehisi Coates re-opened the question of whether the United States government should pay reparations to African-Americans for the crimes of two and a half centuries of slavery, 60 years of Jim Crow-style segregation and decades more of racist housing policies, zoning and community development. His conclusion — that a great accounting of wrongs must take place, as well as a decision about how to make amends for them– has inevitably sparked disagreement. But set that aside. Imagine we have decided yes, as a society we must pay a price for these injustices, and it must be large. Those payments could well constitute the stimulus that the U.S. economy needs to take it into the next century.

To the economy, stimulus is stimulus, as long as it’s done right. Whether it is paid to a group of people based on where they live, their ethnicity or their religion might matter to politics, but to the economy, it doesn’t matter – as long as the money is put to work through either consumption or investment. The reparations-as-stimulus idea gets a short mention from Coates, who writes that:

The people selling Air Jordans and Lebron jerseys will see a short term boost.

don't forget purveyors of purple Cadillacs, and KFC franchises.

The more you give in to any group whose main identity is built on grievance, the more you affirm that they must have been terribly wronged, and the more ardently they will cling to that grievance—especially once it becomes both their identity and their career—until they are nothing but grievance. It will literally make them even more aggressive, resentful, and violent than they already are. If you think they hunt us now, give them payment for being angry and you’ll start seeing massacres.

I wish they would try this and maybe this country would finally have a civil war that annihilates socialism/communism in this country.

It’s not your ancestors that are indentured to the Federal government,

it’s YOU and your children, and grandchildren, and great-grandchildren, and...

The last 8 years, no really bad fed spending idea has been dismissed.

Therefore, reparations is something they might try any minute now.

...as long as the money (reparations) is put to work through either consumption or investment.

Well, the proposed "recipients" of said money have demonstrated, thanks to obama's gibsmedat programs, that they will neither work nor invest, so that leaves consumption.

They are already doing that, so what's the point of the whole thing?

To rip off every damned penny the white man makes...now and forevermore?

Reparations will occur over my cold, dead body.

I'm sure a horse's ass will be along to show me the error of my ways, based upon his superior intellect and powers of deduction, but I remain firm in my assessment.

Yes, taking from Mr Anderson to give to Mr Johnson so that Mr Johnson can spend it rather than Mr Anderson... THAT is the fast path to prosperity!

(Never mind the costs associated with simple logistics of such a huge transfer, plus the fraud, waste, and corruption skims by most of those coming even close to the funds. Also never mind that a large percentage of those with dark skin do no come from enslaved ancestry. Also never mind that a vast percentage of those without dark skin have no slave-owners in their ancestry. It's for "social healing" that we have to hemorrhage another few trillion, despite the fact that no such healing ever actually takes place.)

Why is this even an issue? This is just another tool to keep the races divided. We fought a civil war and lost over 600 thousand to free those slaves. To keep on pushing this issue is what the left does. How about the reparations for all those Irish that built the Erie Canal. How about all those Eastern Europeans That slaved away in the coals mines? this list could go on and on.

They can continue to keep coming back to the issue of “reparations” for generations, regardless of how much monetary support is given to keep them is a perpetual state of dependency.

It is as if slavery had never ended.

Pretty sure it was at one time. This situation today is a “new slavery” which requires reparations all over again.

I totally agree that any living slaves should be compensated with Confederate money.

confederate currency is far from worthless (and the only living slaves that are legalized by their nations are in Africa...funny eh?)

on rebel money...... Today, the value of these notes is far from worthless. Their prices range from under one hundred dollars for the most common and heavily printed series, to the tens of thousands for the rarest. Most of the heavily printed issues are still readily available to some extent, while the rarer issues are tightly held by collectors, and don't surface that often. One thing is certain though, quality Confederate notes have shown to steadily increase in value over the years, and make a good investment.

How about if we give each and every one of them plane fare, a one way ticket, and a house in Liberia, west Africa?

Get them and their crime off of our streets and place it amongst what they like? We have already suffered years upon years of social anchors and their associated costs.

Reparations start with their trip to Africa. Let them participate in what they love!

The DNC is the living remnant of the slavery party, and they are the living remnant of the Jim Crow party.

Look at old photos of lynchings. The Democrats are the ones standing around watching. The only Republicans in the photos are possibly the people hanging from the trees.

Look at old photos of people being fire-hosed. The Democrats are the ones holding the fire-hoses, and the attack dogs, and swinging the bats. If there are any Republicans in the photos at all, they are among the ones being attacked and beaten into the ground.

The Republican Party was born in the early 1850s for the expressed purpose of ending slavery. Primarily Christians, who despaired of ever seeing the Whig Party take a moral stand. And in a decade slavery was gone.

One party supported slavery, and Jim Crow, and race repression, and continues to be a party obsessed by race in the modern era, and its the DNC. If anyone pays reparations, it should be the DNC and its supporters.

I like reparations. Here’s the math:

The GDP of the average African country works out to about 550 dollars per person per year. The GDP in this country is about 45000 per person. Thus, every African American should pay the US Government 44,500 per year for every year they have been alive. Then the government should disperse that money to all white people.

That would “repair” things, as in, true reparations.

...their past criminal behaviors as represented by their higher rate of incarceration throughout the USA.

Reparationists have a ready answer: That's because of selective prosecution: blacks have been railroaded, that's why more of them are in prison.
