Have you tried Amazon? It might even be cheaper, and delivered free to your door.

Both. Liberalism really is a mental disorder.

Wal-Mart probably wouldn’t be destroying too many “mom and pop shops” in New York City. Shopping malls in northern New Jersey have been doing that for years. If anything, a Wal-Mart store in NYC would attract tons of customers who are now shopping at Wal-Mart stores in New Jersey.

I think the legend of Walmart’s destroying mom and pop shops is way exaggerated. Walmart typically operates in shopping areas where there are other stores near and around it. Those small businesses would not be there, if it destroyed them.

Yes and no ... I've had things delivered that I didn't need/want right away, but I'm pretty much set on "things I need but don't have" ... every purchase now is necessity and/or part of daily life ... milk, gasoline, etc.

We grow some food we can, do without some things because we don't need or want them .. etc.

If I have to replace a light bulb ... I find the cheapest one ... they ALL burn out

Mom n pop disappeared 20 years ago ... the argument is moot.

_____________________________________________________

Correct. And the State has had more to do with killing off the small business owners more than a thousand Walmarts could ever do. What with excessive taxes, codes, permits, regulations, and more taxes... Mom and Pop don’t stand a chance.

Another thing. These liberals hate Walmart and love the Mom and Pop? They should know that Walmart is the ULTIMATE Mom and Pop. In the early 60’s Sam Walton and his brother opened his dime store in Rogers AR on a wing and a prayer.

Walamrt is the glorification of an American success story. And they did it without bailouts from the government. They did it in spite of the government.

And that’s why these liberals are so angry.

These are the Occupoopers.

They don't work. They live with mommy & daddy.

Perpetual 'student' all their life.

They don't care about job creation, those created directly and indirectly by a new Walmart.

Add PetSmart, Pet Supermarket and all the other big box pet stores. They all destroy small business. 90% of the local pet shops that existed 20 years ago are gone and not replaced. Major cities that had 30 or 40 shops now have one or two.
I run a local fish store and struggle to stay in business because I cannot compete with chains that buy by the truckload direct from manufacturers. My cost at the wholesaler is not different from the prices these places charge at retail.
I survive because I provide service, personal commitment and expertise, commodities unavailable at a big box store.

As normal, the liberals are eager to tell others what to do with their money, and of course, not step up to the plate and replace those funds they don’t want spent...

But it’s a twofer here - as a conservative, I can agree with them not dropping oodles of cash on liberal causes and instead encourage donations to conservative organizations who will likely use the money far more effectively.

RE: I can’t figure out why anyone or company would want to stay there, never mind move there

NYC’s population is 4 times the size of Maine, Vernmont and New Hampshire combined.

The volume of business you can do with the largest population of any city in America is the incentive.

But with the anti-business mentality of the Mayor and city council, the incentive is disappearing.

I don’t think it’s been disproven. I think Walmart disproved it...: )
I do know several stores that closed in small towns after Walmart moved in. Hardware stores, grocery stores, arts and crafts stores to name a few...

Walmart did not disprove it, basic economics disproves it. Because of Walmart and Aldi, I can purchase groceries and dry goods at a significantly cheaper price than a mom and pop. With the money saved, I purchase specialty items that I normally wouldn’t be able to afford from other mom and pop shops.

Example: Kroger carries this great line of wine, Pinnetti, for $4.99/bottle. It’s excellent. It’s our house wine. They also have a decent selection of other wines. However, when I make a special wine purchase I go to our local wine shop and and get personal service and do a taste test. I will spend more on the wine but I know that I will get what I want. That same bottle will be cheaper on the Kroger shelf, but the wine shop was able to provide the service that I needed. I do the same thing with paint. Lowes is cheaper, but if I’m spending money on paint I’m spending a little extra at our mom and pop for the service. Lowes is great for other things, and because I save money shopping there I can go to the mom and pop for more expensive paint.

While don’t think Walmart is merely making donations out of their own good heart, the money might be helping someone at the same time and Walmart does destroy mom and pop shops and take away their means to support their familiesEver pay attention to WHAT'S AROUND a Walmart???

2 miles from me there is a Walmart.

Long before Walmart was there, there was a discount store called The Treasury. It sat on a chunk of land, with very little around it.
After it closed, it sat vacant for a number of years, until a developer turned it into an indoor mini mall, anchored by Waccamaw Pottery.

The mall failed terribly, but Waccamaw did OK... for a while. But it closed in '97 and the building torn down

Then Walmart bought the land and built a new larger building, for a Walmart and Sam's Club.

Suddenly, after Walmart came in, the surrounding land that was always vacant, or couldn't sustain anything, started to grow. Within a couple of years, a Staples wa built across the parking lot and the farside of the land. The 3 little strip shopping centers were built, 2 on one side, one on the other.

Today, there is a Subway, Muscle Maker Grill, Dunkin Donuts, Planet Coffee, Buona Beef (hot dogs and pizza), Pot Belly's, Starbucks, Steak And Shake, American Mattress, Sport Clips...Those are the places I can remember, off the top of my head and probably doesn't cover 1/3 of the places. All in about 40-60 acres.

How many mom and pop stores does one Walmart put out of business and how many people did they all employ? How many does Walmart?

How many MORE, mom and pop shops open around a Walmart after it opens and how many people do they employ.

Ever drive out in the country, to a small town that has next to nothing. But then a Walmart opens and the entire area surrounding Walmart explodes.

As a small business owner, I sympathize with the mom and pop stores. It wasn’t Walmart that put them out of business though. It’s an unwillingness to adapt that did it.
