I saw George Washington order the hanging of a couple of deserters on “Turn” a couple weeks back.

It wasn’t a lack of compassion but an act of compassion for the others who served.

The Romans used to put them on the cross. Or make fellow Legionaires beat them to death.
Either way works for me.

We were talking about that very scene this morning.

Interesting site here with lots of info about the Revolutionary War spy ring from TURN...also trivia, gifs, historical customs, etc. (And I for one am glad to have Maj. Andre's braid explained).

I saw George Washington order the hanging of a couple of deserters on “Turn” a couple weeks back.

At Valley Forge, there were 2 incidents of desertion.

The first was not punished by execution. But, the deserters were punished.

The second, however, resulted in a firing squad. A certain number of deserters [drawn by lots?] were condemned. And, a certain number [again, drawn by lots?] were selected to be the firing squad. The rest of the deserters had to watch.

Result? No more desertions ...
