The Conservatives have won the Newark by-election, retaining the seat with a majority of more than 7,000.
Candidate Robert Jenrick polled 17,431 votes, beating UKIP's Roger Helmer, who finished second with 10,028 votes.
Labour's Michael Payne came in third with 6,842 votes but it was a disastrous result for the Lib Dems, who were beaten into sixth place.
Candidate David Watts finished sixth behind an Independent and the Green Party, losing his deposit in the process.
The Lib Dems 1,004 votes represents their worst performance in a post-war English by-election.
Opinion polls had suggested the Tories would hold on to what was considered a safe seat, where they had recorded a majority of 16,152 in the 2010 election.....
UKIP leader Nigel Farage conceded defeat before the result was announced, saying: "I think this has been a stunning campaign that we've fought in a very short space of time.
"We've been up against probably the biggest ever Conservative machine defending about their 40th safest seat in the country. If the indications are right, we'll be celebrating a massive advance for our party"...

UKIP is running strong increasing its vote by 22 percent to 26 percent but the Liberal Democrat Party appears to be imploding with a sixth place finish under 3 percent.

If you are Left, vote Labour. If Right, vote Con. If intelligent Right, vote UKIP.
UKIP has advanced to major party status.
I think, for once, the situation is even better than you intimate. The liberal democrats are, in actuality, more left wing than the modern Labour party. Therefore, as no one is voting for them, it follows that leftist thinking is on the retreat. People don't vote labour because they are left, or Conservative because they are right. Both parties core support is almost entirely tribal in nature. If you want to think, as opposed to let other people do your thinking for you, vote UKIP!

Compared to the Newark in New Jersey, any other place so named would be better by default!

The majority for the Conservatives was reduced from over 16- thousand to over 7-thousand. A bridge too far, their majority was done by 50%.
I was gonna say -- the only conservatives in Newark are there because they took the wrong exit. But then I remembered that there are Newarks in the UK, too.

IMHO, the Tories (aka Conservatives) and the UKIP should strike a deal to forfeit a few districts in each others’ favor and then form a more conservative coalition than the current one.
Why would the Tory leaders want a more conservative coalition? They have the Lib-Dems after all.
The label Liberal Democrat doesn’t mean what it does in the United States. They are sort of like the Reform Party, ideologically between the Labor Party and the Tory Party.
That is an analysis based on the assumption that UKIP will only take votes from the Conservatives, not labour. But that is untrue. In most of the northern cities and counties UKIP will be fighting labour, not the tories. And I think they will win a considerable number of those seats.
The Lib Dems are merger of the old Liberal party (which was once good, I don’t know who I would have preferred in the 19th Century) which definitely wasn’t as bad as Labour, and the Social Democrats, a less marxist breakaway faction of Labour (I guess they were Blair New Labour Types, before Blair Labour was very far left back then).
On balance I’d say they are better than Labour, I’m sure there are some issues where they are worse (level of EU support for one).
A Tory/Ukip coalition would be the ideal result. I don’t know if that result is possible, I fear a lot of narrow plurality wins for Labour and not many UKIP seats. I am now wishing that instant-runoff voting had passed.
Lib dems may get wiped out, the old Liberals came back from oblivion once or twice but I’m not sure they would. Cameron would likely court their rump to merge with his Tories. UKIP could be the new third party with increasing Tory defections.
UKIP is considered an outsider party opposed by the pro-EU UK elite like Richard Branson.
If UKIP succeeds in holding the balance of power after next year’s General Election (May 7th) which it has a shot at (They can get 20 percent of the popular vote if it were held today translating into dozens of seats) the Labour and Conservative parties will be forced into a coalition government by the elites.
This will expose the hard truth that the major parties don’t really have big differences, they just pretend to.
